The Dallas Cowboys are in an envious position right now. The team currently sits at 4-1 on the NFL season, but all four wins have come with backup quarterback Cooper Rush in the lineup. Dak Prescott has missed every game but the opener due to a fractured thumb but is well on his way back to the lineup. Once Prescott returns, the conversation of which QB should start from there will only pick up more traction.

Former Cowboy QB Troy Aikman broke down the potential decision during an appearance on 96.7 The Ticket on Thursday. He said a division road win against the undefeated Eagles would get this conversation really started next week.

“If the (Cowboys win Sunday), you start asking the question, ‘Do we put Dak back in?’. Considering what they’ve been able to do and how they’ve been able to win games with Cooper Rush, I think that becomes a real question the organization has to answer,” said Aikman.

Prescott is the franchise quarterback in Dallas. They’ve invested in him as such and he’s been the team’s starter since 2016. Rush has come in, though, and taken full control of the team. He has completed 61.9% of his passes for 775 yards and four touchdowns in his four appearances as the starter,

Defeating 5-0 Philadelphia would do a lot for Rush’s case to remain the starter and, according to Aikman, Jerry Jones is all for a QB competition. Prescott’s position hasn’t changed, but the way Rush has the team playing would be difficult to ignore in his opinion.

“I’m going off what the owner said. He said he’d welcome a quarterback controversy…Those become hard questions and it’s the only position it probably happens at,” Aikman said. “If they’re winning and they win a big road game against Philadelphia, I could see where there is some pause and you can say, ‘Well, how exactly do we handle this?’. And I don’t know…Dak is the quarterback of this franchise. I love the guy. And they’re better with Dak at quarterback, but the team is playing good football right now.”

If anything, this should have been a positive for everyone involved. Prescott has had time to heal, Rush has earned his chance to start, and the Cowboys have continued to win. However, the Cowboys must make a decision with Prescott nearing a return. It’s a different conversation now, though, and Dallas must make the best call for the team.
