The Washington Commanders may be looking to revamp their defense as the NFL Trade Deadline is rapidly approaching.

According to Diana Russini of The Athletic, two of the Commanders’ defensive stars could be wearing a new uniform before the end of the season. Washington hasn’t been shy, Chase Young and Montez Sweat are both available for trade.

“Washington Commanders defensive linemen Chase Young and Montez Sweat both have contracts expiring after the season and could be on the trade block,” Russini reported. “I was told Washington has made calls to take the temperature of the market but is staying patient now, and that the next two weeks of play will shape the decision on their futures.

“The sense I get out of Washington is one of them will be on the move … if Washington can get the proper compensation.”

First, Young was supposed to be the next fantastic NFL pass rusher out of Ohio State, as Washington selected the former Buckeyes star with the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, injuries and ineffective play has changed the course of his career, and Washington may be looking to recoup some capital for him.

Since coming into the league, Young has amassed 89 total tackles, 14 sacks, six forced fumbles and eight pass deflections. Additionally, he was named the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and made the Pro Bowl during his rookie season. It hasn’t been smooth sailing since though, and that’s causing Washington to rethink his future with the team.

As for Sweat, he came into the NFL after Washington selected him with the No. 26 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played his college ball at Michigan State, Copiah-Lincoln Community College and Mississippi State, and came into the league with immense hype.

Over his time with the Commanders, he’s put up some awesome numbers, including 192 total tackles, 34.5 sacks, 11 pass deflections, nine forced fumbles and a touchdown.

With pass rushers at a premium in the NFL, it’s shocking to see Washington is willing to part with both players, but it makes sense with their contracts expiring after the season. If they don’t plan on re-signing them, they might as well move them for draft capital.

Alas, time will tell if Chase Young or Montez Sweat are moved at the NFL Trade Deadline, but there’s at least some smoke pertaining to the Commanders’ pass-rushing duo.
