QB Hunter Johnson is returning to the Clemson Tigers

After losing several players to the transfer portal throughout the season, Clemson has finally added a transfer of its own.

On Monday, Clemson Sports’ Matt Connolly confirmed that former Tigers quarterback Hunter Johnson is coming back to where his college career began.

Johnson now joins a quarterback mix that features Cade Klubnik, D.J. Uiagalelei, and Hunter Helms. He also has as much experience — four years (sat out his 2018 season due to transfer rules) — as the aforementioned quarterbacks have combined.

History of Johnson at Clemson and Northwestern

Johnson, a Clemson signee in the 2017 recruiting cycle, spent the previous four years at Northwestern. He was with the Tigers for their 2017-2018 season but opted to transfer before his sophomore season began.

As a high schooler, Johnson was one of the more coveted prospects in the nation. The product of Brownsburg (Indiana) was a consensus five-star and the top-ranked quarterback in his class.

In limited time on the field, Johnson was fairly productive as a freshman at Clemson. He completed 21 passes out of 27 attempts and had a couple of touchdowns to just one interception.

The next season, however, a future legend arrived on campus in Trevor Lawrence. Once June 2018 rolled around, Johnson had made the decision to transfer to Northwestern.

According to his profile on Northwestern’s official site, Johnson played in 11 total games while with the program. He completed 95-of-183 passing attempts for 856 yards, to go along with five touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Arguably the best game of his tenure with the Wildcats came in their season opener versus Michigan State last season. In that contest, Johnson completed 70 percent of his passes and threw for three touchdown passes without any interceptions.
