LSU defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey will be away from the program as the team reports for fall camp, head coach Brian Kelly announced on Wednesday.

“Defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey will step away from the LSU Football program as he deals with a personal health matter,” Kelly said in a statement. “In Coach Lindsey’s absence, John Jancek will serve as defensive line coach, and Bob Diaco will coach outside linebackers and special teams. Our prayers are with Coach Lindsey and his family, and we ask that their privacy be respected. We look forward to his return to the program.”

WBRZ’s Michael Cauble reported after the release that Lindsey was taken to a hospital on Tuesday by ambulance out of precaution.

LSU without Lindsey as fall camp begins

Lindsey, who replaced Jamar Cain at the position this offseason, spent the past three seasons at South Carolina. He previously worked as defensive ends coach at Illinois in 2020. He was also the defensive line coach at Western Kentucky (2017-19), Georgia Southern (2016) and Furman (2012-15).

“Jimmy is an outstanding defensive line coach and we are excited to welcome him to our staff,” Kelly said when the Tigers hired him. “He will do a great job of not only coaching our players on the field, but also helping them develop off the field as we continue our commitment to graduating champions.

“Jimmy has a proven track record of developing defensive linemen. I know our players are going to benefit from his expertise.”

During his time in Columbia, Lindsey has both recruited and developed some standout defensive linemen, including Zacch Pickens. He also coached 2020 All-Big Ten selection Owen Carney at Illinois.

Lindsey has a longstanding relationship with LSU defensive coordinator Matt House. The relationship dates back to the pair working together as part of the defensive staff at Gardner-Webb in 2005.

LSU is entering its second season with Brian Kelly as its head coach. The Tigers finished his first season with a 10-4 record and Citrus Bowl win over Purdue. LSU opens its season against Florida State Sept. 3.
