There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 2 opener against East Carolina. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football has a pair of established star backs in Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum, but there will be competition for the No. 3 job this spring. With plenty of candidates, true freshman Benjamin Hall figures to be in the mix.

His rise early on has been somewhat surprising given his low recruiting ranking, but he has burst onto the scene in a big way and positioned himself for consideration.

“Kalel Mullings has obviously stood out. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s physical, and he’s pretty fast, and he’s got tremendous ball skills for a guy his size, so very excited about him,” offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore said this spring.. “CJ Stokes is another guy who’s really coming on in the spring. But this young Benjamin Hall kid man, he’s got some dynamic ability.

“He’s built low to the ground. Thick, huge legs. His legs are like Blake’s, maybe a little bigger. But he’s got a great future, and excited about him and Cole Cabana both. Kind of had some injury stuff he’s working through, and he’s getting better and he’s fine now, but excited about those young backs.”

Hall will duke it out with Cabana, Tavierre Dunlap, Mullings and CJ Stokes for the third running back job.

Benjamin Hall was arguably the MVP of the spring game, finishing with 13 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Blue team,” The Wolverine’s Chris Balas said after the spring game, awarding him one of our three-game balls. “For a guy who didn’t exactly tear it up in his senior year in high school, he has arrived as though he has something to prove. He showed great patience, power and even a little bit of speed in carving up the Maize defense. It looks like he will be a good one when he gets his opportunity.”
