Michigan football: Chris Hinton declares for the NFL Draft

In a somewhat surprising move, Michigan defensive tackle Chris Hinton has declared for the NFL Draft. The former five-star had a breakout season in the winged helmet in his third season, but most expected him to return for a fourth year.

Instead, the third-year Michigan sophomore will test the NFL waters.

“To say it was an honor to play at the University of Michigan and to have the opportunity to play for the best in the nation would be an understatement,” Hinton said. “The University of Michigan, the fans, the city of Ann Arbor are all amazing. They will always have a special place in my heart.”

Hinton notched 17 tackles this year, 15 solo, and recovered two fumbles. The Michigan tackle improved dramatically agains the run and played his best football in his final year.

“Thank you to my teammates. You will forever be my brothers,” he said. “We reached unbelievable heights this season, and I will take our memories at The Big House and on the road with me for the rest of my life.

“Coach (Jim) Harbaugh, Coach (Mike) Macdonald, Coach (Shaun) Nua and the entire Michigan coaching and support staff … thank you! Each and every one of you helped develop and guide me to be the student-athlete that I am today. I am forever thankful for your guidance and support.”
