Michigan Wolverines football co-offensive coordinator and line coach Sherrone Moore, a 36-year-old, was named one of the top rising stars in college football by On3 reporter Matt Zenitz, one of 65 on the list. Moore received a big promotion this offseason — he’ll now call plays along with co-coordinator Matt Weiss — after leading one of America’s best offensive line units in 2021.

Zenitz “gathered votes and feedback from more than 100 people in the coaching world — including head coaches, coordinators and team officials — to identify rising-star assistants who are on track to garner interest for bigger jobs this next coaching cycle.” Considering Moore is already one of the most decorated coaches on Michigan’s staff, perhaps the next step is becoming a head coach.

“Sherrone Moore is more than ready to be a head coach,” Harbaugh said this spring.

“Coaching the offensive line and calling the plays, you’ve gotta get some practice at that. Coaching a position, calling the position, head coach — that’s a lot of stuff. I thought Sherrone really did a great job handling it [in the April 2 spring Game].”

Where Michigan football position groups stand on Phil Steele’s top unit rankings

The Michigan assistant is currently the second-longest tenured coach on Harbaugh’s staff (behind Jay Harbaugh) and has incrementally been given more responsibility throughout his tenure in Ann Arbor. He began coaching tight ends in 2018 and did so through the 2020 campaign. He then took over as the offensive line coach and co-coordinator in 2021. Now, he’ll call plays this fall. As Harbaugh mentioned, the transition is going smoothly.

Last season was a banner year for the Michigan team, and the offensive line was one big shining star. Under Moore’s tutelage, the unit won the Joe Moore Award for the nation’s best line. Michigan led the country with 34 tackles for loss given up last season, 10 less than No. 2 Air Force, despite playing 14 games. The Wolverines yielded just 14 sacks, which was tied for the fifth-best mark in the land.

Harbaugh tapping Moore as the Michigan line coach wound up being the right call. The players responded to his tough but caring coaching style.

“I’m not knocking any of the previous coaches — they’re all great coaches — but at that time it’s what we needed,” former Michigan offensive lineman and New England Patriots rookie Andrew Stueber said in December. “We needed a fresh perspective, a new look, a new energy, some could say. I think that was a huge part of our success.”

Jim Harbaugh loves his 2022 Michigan staff

Harbaugh believes his entire staff is strong and potentially better than ever heading into the 2022 season.

“I’m looking at every guy on the staff,” Harbaugh said. “All 10 of our coaches — they’re really competent, they’re really good at what they do, they all bleed blue, and they’re all pulling in the same direction. We’ve had that here in the past with assistant coaches, but at this point, never better than the way it is now.”
