WATCH: J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum speak at CFP National Championship media day
HOUSTON, Texas – The Michigan Wolverines are two days away from the College Football Playoff National Championship game against the Washington Huskies and will be led into battle by quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum. Each player had his individual time in front of a microphone during Saturday’s media day event in Houston, where it still has not quite sunk in that the end of the season is upon them.
“I can only speak for myself personally,” McCarthy told the media on Saturday. “I feel like it really hasn’t. Everything we’ve done to get here, we’re continuing to do the same things. I think we keep the same approach and treat it as — obviously it’s the National Championship, but it’s a football game at the end of the day and we got to go out there and execute each play, and that’s how we’re treating it right now.”
Michigan expected to be in this spot, though, and several players spoke the trip to Houston into existence the moment they return to Ann Arbor last winter. Corum was among them when he grabbed a microphone at Crisler Center in February and called his shot during a basketball game.
“It was always for us Houston or bust,” Corum said. “I even said it back in February at one of the Michigan basketball games. I had the mic in front of the crowd and I told the fans, ‘I promise you we’re going to win a National Championship.’ We haven’t done it yet, so have to stay locked in this week. The hay is never in the barn. Make sure we watch as much film we can over the next couple days and make sure we’re prepared for Monday. This is everything I dreamed of, everything I came back for.
