Michigan Wolverines football is hitting the transfer portal hard after it opened Dec. 5. The Maize and Blue landed former Arizona State offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson, offered former Coastal Carolina EDGE Josaiah Stewart and now are in the mix for a tight end prospect.

According to his Twitter account, former Cal Poly tight end Josh Cuevas received an offer from Michigan. He revealed that he had a conversation with Michigan tight ends coach Grant Newsome.

The 6-5, 245-pounder has also been offered by Arizona State, Nevada, Utah, Washington and Illinois since entering the portal. He spent two seasons at Cal Poly, redshirting in 2021 and appearing in 11 contests in 2022, and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Cuevas hauled in 58 receptions, which ranked third among FCS tight ends, per PFF, for 663 yards (fourth) and 6 touchdowns (tied for fifth) this season. He also posted a 70.6 PFF run-blocking rating, which slotted third on his team. Cal Poly went 2-9 this past season and failed to make the postseason.

The Los Angeles, Calif., native earned FCS Freshman All-American honors and was named third-team All-Big Sky.

The Michigan transfer target hauled in 4 passes for 56 yards in three games during the 2021 campaign. He was unranked as a recruit in the 2021 class, per On3.

Michigan recently took one transfer out of the FCS level, wide receiver Daylen Baldwin (Jackson State), ahead of the 2021 season. Baldwin caught 17 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns a year ago, before trying his hand at the NFL.

Michigan saw senior tight end and team captain Erick All enter the transfer portal Dec. 5, following four seasons with the program. The Maize and Blue have six scholarship tight ends expected to be on the roster next season, headlined by freshman Colston Loveland.

While Loveland will undoubtedly be the leader at the position next season, with graduate Luke Schoonmaker set to head to the NFL, the Wolverines use multiple tight ends on most offensive plays (53.5 percent), so depth is needed.

“They’ve meant so much,” Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said of his tight ends last week. “I mean, it’s just another group of completely unselfish team guys. Every single one of them.”

Cuevas could add to that should he come to Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines are in the College Football Playoff, ranked No. 2 and set to take on third-ranked TCU in the Fiesta Bowl Dec. 31. They won the Big Ten for the second straight season.
