ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan Wolverines football junior linebacker Junior Colson, senior EDGE Braiden McGregor and graduate offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart met with the media Monday afternoon to discuss spring ball.

Colson started all 14 games last season, after being a freshman All-American the prior year. Now, he’s hoping to take the next step with a talented linebacker room. He believes he can be the best player in the country at his position.

“Next step is to be the best. Next step is to be the best out there,” the Michigan linebacker proclaimed. “The next step is to be an All-American. The next step is to take my game to a whole ‘nother level. Understanding our defense, playing MIKE now, I think it gets easier as you’ve been in the system for multiple years.”

McGregor identified some Michigan players who have surprised this spring, going in depth on each side of the ball. He also talked about his desire to be “the guy” at edge rusher for the Maize and Blue and how excited he is for this opportunity.

“Everything,” McGregor said when asked what’s different for him this spring compared to past years.

Barnhart discussed his approach to spring practices this season, after he became a full-time starter in the second half of last season. He’s looking to hang onto a job for the entire year this season, starting with playing well this spring. Barnhart was one of many Michigan upperclassmen who decided to return, and they all had a bigger goal in mind. Graduate defensive back Mike Sainristil said last week that he came back to win a national championship, and Barnhart said he’s not alone.

“I agree with [what Sainristil said],” Barnhart stated. “We’re all here to win a natty. We’re not here to go win a Big Ten championship game. I mean, we are, but at the end of the day we want to win a natty and everybody wants to be great. Mikey, he wants to win a natty. We all do, and he wants to create a legacy here as well.”
