The Wolverine Breaks Down Michigan S Spring Game Position By Position I Wolverines I Goblue

The Michigan Wolverines completed spring ball on Saturday with its annual Maize vs. Blue scrimmage in Ann Arbor, which went to offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell and the Maize team by a score of 17-7 over defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and the Blue squad.

There were plenty of storylines at each spot, but the bulk of the takeaways came at the quarterback position. Michigan has a battle on its hands as it looks to round into form for the 2024 season, and had juniors Alex Orji and senior Davis Warren leading the way Saturday. Seventh-year senior Jack Tuttle could factor in when he gets healthy, but it looked like a two-horse race during a spring game setting.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed the quarterback situation on Monday night and what made the Orji vs. Warren battle so intriguing.

“[Alex Orji] an intriguing weapon there,” Broome said. “I’ll stop short of saying that he clearly showed he is QB1 or anything like that, but when you look at his candidacy for the position, you see what they see and you see why he’s so damn intriguing because he can rip that ball. And when he does set his feet, when he’s on time… it looks like it probably is supposed to look. I was impressed with him.

“Davis Warren, I think comes out of this game as maybe the biggest stockriser only because all he did was run the offense and execute it at a high level based on the plays that were called. And that’s kind of the baseline expectation for what a Michigan quarterback is going to look like. It’s what made Cade McNamara very good a couple of years ago. It was the foundation that helped J.J. McCarthy take the step the did over these last few years.

“I think there’s something to be said about Sherrone Moore and Kirk Campbell calling a good offense. So to just run the offense and not make mistakes and be on time, be on task, I was impressed with what we saw from him as well. There was a very clear tier between Orgi and Warren and then what we saw the rest of the way.”

Other topics included the takeaways at every other position, a potential transfer portal position of need for football and Michigan men’s basketball head coach Dusty May adding six players in the portal over the weekend.
