Michigan Lands Maryland LB Transfer Jaishawn Barham

Michigan Wolverines football has been mining the NCAA transfer portal for talent, including expressing interest in former UConn cornerback Mumu Bin-Wahad. The Wolverines aren’t alone in reaching out to Bin-Wahad, with USC, Miami, Syracuse, Arkansas, Northwestern,Michigan State and others also doing so.

Bin-Wahad is the No. 157 overall player and 14th-best cornerback in the transfer portal, according to On3’s rankings.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder spent one season at West Virginia in 2022, played the 2023 campaign at UConn and has two years of eligibility remaining. He’s appeared in 17 career games with eight starts (all in 2023) and played a total of 552 defensive snaps.

Bin-Wahad was named College Football Network’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year among independent programs and landed on the site’s All-Independent second-team defense.

The Atlanta, Ga., native totaled 34 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception and pass breakups in 12 games with eight starts during the 2023 campaign at UConn. His pick was returned for a touchdown in a 31-18 win over Massachusetts Nov. 25.

Bin-Wahad led his team with an 81.4 PFF coverage grade in 2023, allowing 26 receptions for 192 yards and no touchdowns on 45 targets down the field. He gave up a reception on just 57.8 percent of the times he was targeted and allowed 7.4 yards per reception.

UConn posted a 3-9 record in 2023, with wins over Rice, Sacred Heart and Massachusetts.

The Michigan target played in five games as a freshman at West Virginia in 2022, including two that he only saw time on special teams. He finished with 4 tackles and returned 1 punt for no yards.

Bin-Wahad was a three-star recruit out of Grayson (Ga.) High, ranked the No. 913 overall player and 77th-best safety in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Michigan hosted former Western Kentucky cornerback Upton Stout for a visit in December. The Wolverines lead for Stout, who also took a trip to USC, on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), with a 97.5-percent chance to land him. A return to Western Kentucky, of course, is also possible. The Wolverines will lose two starters in their crop of cornerbacks after this season — graduate Josh Wallace and graduate Mike Sainristil, who primarily plays nickel. Sophomore Will Johnson is slated to be a returning starter.

Michigan has one transfer portal commitment in former Maryland linebacker Jaishawn Barham.
