Former Michigan tight end Matthew Hibner entered the transfer portal after the 2023 season and has found a new home, committing to SMU Tuesday. From On The Pony Express’ Billy Embody:

Hibner spent four years at Michigan and will have two years of eligibility remaining after redshirting this season.

Maryland, Kentucky, NC State and others were programs SMU was battling for the grad transfer.

Hibner never started on the offense for the Wolverines but won a trio of Big Ten titles as a core special teamer from 2021-23. He didn’t play as a true freshman in 2020. He’s got two career receptions for 15 yards and four tackles, plus a fumble recovery.

SMU adds his National Championship pedigree to the program that’s in need of a big body in the tight end room for offensive coordinator Casey Woods.

Playing in a Michigan program that’s had no shortage of top-shelf tight ends — notably Luke Schoonmaker and Colston Loveland during Hibner’s tenure — it was been a struggle to climb the depth chart. Hibner played in seven games and logged 26 offensive snaps in 2023, helping the Wolverines finish 15-0 with a third-straight Big Ten championship and the national title.

Former Michigan fullback Ben Mason has been signed by Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers. Mason was with the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad from 2022-23. He’s been on other practice squads since entering the NFL in 2021, when he was picked in the fifth round by the Ravens.

Michigan is “soon expected” to hire former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton as an assistant coach under new head man Dusty May. Boynton was the head coach for the Cowboys from 2017-24, amassing a 119-109 record.

Quote Of The Day

“I’ve been telling the guys, ‘We don’t got Rome [Roman Wilson], we don’t got CJ [Cornelius Johnson], but that don’t gotta be a bad thing. It’s our chance to go do something.’ Just every day coming out understanding that we, as a group, individually, we haven’t done a whole lot yet — and this is a year that we can show what we can do.”
