The Michigan Wolverines are never short on storylines in a multitude of sports, but this April figures to be particularly busy for a few of the big-ticket programs in Ann Arbor.

Coming off a 5-2 win over rival Michigan State on Sunday, Michigan hockey is headed to its third-straight Frozen Four appearance with a chance to win a national title. That event is set for April 11 and 13 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

But hockey’s success is only the beginning of what’s to come for U-M.

Football figures to be busy this month, too. The transfer portal opens on April 15-30 for players in and out of the program, which should give us a much better idea of what the roster looks like in Sherrone Moore’s first season at the helm. Spring practices also continue to roll along, concluding with a split-squad exhibition game on April 20 at the Big House.

One week later, the 2024 NFL Draft kicks off in Detroit – just 45 minutes down the road from Ann Arbor – as Michigan football goes for the record of total players selected in a single draft. The defending national champions, who had 18 players invited to the NFL Combine, are looking to topple Georgia’s record of 15 players selected, set during the 2022 NFL Draft.

Men’s basketball will also be extremely busy building out a roster under new head coach Dusty May with at least eight scholarship spots available to be filled. It could wind up being more with additional roster attrition that has not occurred yet.

Plenty will take place over the next few weeks, so buckle up.

Michigan quote of the day

One word came to mind while listening to May during his introductory press conference on Tuesday: impressive. And with that, he generated a lot of excitement for Michigan fans that were battered and beaten after a trying 8-24 season under the now-fired Juwan Howard.

It’s not that May had any lines rehearsed for his answers to questions from the media, but he has deep-seated beliefs on building a program, winning games and doing all of it the right way. His answers reflected someone that has a bunch of experience as both an assistant and head coach. There’s a reason why he’s considered one of coaching’s rising stars.
