After a torrid week at the plate, NC State graduate first baseman Garrett Pennington was named the ACC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Pennington went 9-for-13 at the plate in the Wolfpack’s series win at No. 10 Virginia over the weekend. While he impressed against the Cavaliers, he had an overall stellar week when the midweek win over Norfolk State was included.

The Lenexa, Kan., native hit .647 with 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, the three blasts and 22 total bases. Pennington had four straight multi-hit games this week, including a trio of three-hit efforts in Charlottesville this past weekend.

Pennington’s highlight of the weekend was a two-run homer that went over the batter’s eye at Virginia’s Disharoon Park, his third and final blast of the weekend. He nearly had a fourth in his last at-bat, but Cavaliers outfielder Bobby Whalen robbed Pennington at the wall.

The former Wichita State transfer paces the Pack with 55 runs scored, while he also leads the team with a .366 batting average, 29 runs scored, 41 hits, 10 doubles and 11 home runs in league competition.

Pennington and the No. 17 Wolfpack are set to host No. 8 Wake Forest for a three-game series, beginning Thursday night, at Doak Field in Raleigh with NCAA Tournament regional hosting resume-boosting wins on the line.

Quote of the day

NC State men’s basketball signee Paul McNeil is ready to arrive in Raleigh. When he reflected on his high school career, he was appreciative of what he did at his local public school.

“I tried to be the hometown hero,” McNeil said. “You can stay at your high school, stay at your public school and you can get highly recruited. Coming where I come from, small town, small county, it’s a blessing.”
