Pro Football Focus released its top 10 defensive coordinators in college football Thursday, and NC State coach Tony Gibson made the list. After allowing no more than 30 points in a game during the 2022 season, he checked in at No. 8.

He arrived in Raleigh as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2019 and built one of the nation’s top defenses over the past few years. Per his GoPack.com page, Gibson has coached 5 All-Americans and 22 professional football players.

Gibson coached four All-ACC athletes this season, including cornerback Aydan White, who made the first team. During the 2021 season, linebacker Drake Thomas, nose tackle Cory Durden and safety Tanner Ingle all made the first team as well.

He is the only coordinator from the ACC to make Max Chadwick’s list.

“Gibson was promoted to being the sole defensive coordinator in 2020,” Chadwick wrote.

“In each of the last two seasons, his defenses have finished among the Power Five’s 10 best in EPA allowed per play. This past season, NC State was sixth in the rate of successful plays allowed (28.5%).

“Gibson was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2022 for his efforts.”
