Penn State Head Coach James Franklin wants his team to practice like an elite team, press conference

Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media today after the team’s Wednesday afternoon practice at the Lasch football facility. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions take on Delaware in their second non-conference game of the 2023 season. Kickoff is slated for noon on the Peacock app. Hear Franklin’s full comments below. Franklin spoke with the media for just over ten minutes and discussed his team’s improvement from the first week of game action to the second, among other topics.

James Franklin Press Conference

Franklin spoke about his team’s progress this week, including the defensive team’s efforts to improve.

While Franklin spoke about Penn State tight end Theo Johson’s lack of targets on Tuesday, he discussed the tight end’s blocking when asked on Wednesday evening.

“I think you guys have heard me talk about it. We have real tight ends here. And, that’s no knock on anybody else. But I just think we got real tight ends that both block and are able to hurt you in the passing game. I think Brenton Strange is a really good example that. Why did he get drafted so high? Because he can bring a ton of value. Special teams, offense as a receiver, offense as a blocker; those guys are hard to find nowadays.

We’ve done a good job of recruiting those guys. We’ve done a good job at developing those guys. Because, a lot of them I wouldn’t say necessarily did that in high school. So yeah, it’s hard to say that tight ends are not going to be a factor in the game, because there’s a lot of different ways that we’re using them. But we’d like like it to be a little bit more balanced.”
