Penn State Wrestling Prepares To Face Off Against Iowa

The marquee dual meet of the Penn State wrestling season is tonight. The No. 1 Nittany Lions are at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to take on No. 3 Iowa. Head coach Tom Brands’ Hawkeyes will look to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season a week ago in an upset fashion against Michigan. Cael Sanderson’s side, meanwhile, looks to give their head coach his 200th win in blue and white while also securing the program’s 53rd consecutive dual meet victory.

“We have to make it a tough battle,” Brands said this week. “This is going to be a tough one. We’re excited. We’re looking forward to it. And away we go. We’re close.”

Sanderson, for his part, downplayed the chance to win a milestone match. He did, however, credit the environment his team is walking into.

“I think wrestling at Iowa is a lot of fun,” Sanderson said at his weekly news conference. “Their fans know the support. Their event staff is second to known. We watch and say what can we learn from this? And then they have one of the best athletic programs in all of sports in their wrestling team. So, it’s a great place to compete. Everywhere we wrestle, we generally see a big crowd. Here, it’s standing room only. So we wrestle in big environments all the time. So from that standpoint, it’s not as big of a deal.
