Penn State news, notes, and updates for Feb. 5 include numerous wrestling nuggets, including a trio of titles at an open tournament.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with wrestling. Former Nittany Lion national champion Nick Lee has qualified for the 2024 Pan-American games. He beat former Cornell great Yianni Diakomihalis 2-0 due to an injury in the 65 kilogram final.

“Lee won the first match 12-3 over Diakomhalis,” USA Wrestling writes. “Trailing 3-2 at the break, Lee got his offense going, getting four second period takedowns and an exposure to open up the wide lead. Diakomihalis was injured in the first match, and withdrew by injury default in the second match, giving Lee the series two matches to none.”

Lee will now compete in the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier in Acupulco, Mexico, February 28 – March 1, 2024 to try and earn the U.S a spot in the 2024 Olympics at 65 kilograms.

In other news, three Penn State wrestlers won titles at the Edinboro Open on Sunday. Terrell Barraclough was 4-0 with two pins to win the 165-pound bracket. Unattached Nittany Lion freshman Josh Barr was 4-0 with a pin and two technical falls to claim the 184-pound bracket. And, sophomore Lucah Cochran had two pins and two technical falls to take the 197-pound bracket. A total of eight Nittany Lions participated in the event.

“Freshman Connor Pierce was runner-up at 149. Pierce went 4-1 with two pins to take second,” Penn State wrestling writes. “True freshman Kyison Garcia finished in place sixth with a 3-2 mark, wrestling unattached. Garcia had a major and a tech fall at the event. Sophomore Brian Borden went 3-2 to place sixth at 174. Borden had two majors on the day. Juniors Marco Vespa (125) and Tim Levine (149) also competed.”

Quote of the day

“I really love the culture that Coach [James] Franklin has built. I also like that PSU has a 93 percent graduation rate, which is very important to my family and I. They give you all the tools to be successful academically while playing football, and they also heavily emphasize life after football.

“Another thing I really liked was that their coaches explained to me clearly that at Penn State, it doesn’t matter if you’re a two-star or five-star. If you put in the time, work and effort, and can help the team win that week, you will play.”
