Former Tulsa kicker Chase Meyer went into the Transfer Portal earlier this month and quickly heard from a familiar voice. Penn State Special Teams Coordinator Stacy Collins was on the other end of the line with an opportunity to join the Nittany Lions as a walk-on for the coming season.

Following an unofficial visit over the weekend, Meyer decided to take him up on the offer. Meyer announced his plans on Sunday afternoon and Collins is a big part of while he plans to spend the next few years in Happy Valley.

“I’ve known coach Collins for a really long time. He recruited me out of high school when I was at Mater Dei. He’s been at Utah State, he’s been at Boise State and we talked a lot. Once I entered the Transfer Portal this time, he hit me back up and we’ve always had a connection and relationship since high school. It all ended up just working out this time around.”

Meyer will enroll at University Park for the spring semester and have three years left to use his final two years of eligibility. He hopes to come in and compete right away for the job vacated by the graduating Alex Felkins. Meyer will compete with Sander Sahaydak and walk-on Ryan Barker in the spring.

“I’m looking to come in and compete right away. They have two guys on their roster right now but I’m looking to come in and win the job right away,” he said. “I think this is going to be big for me. This is going to be my first full offseason. So adding the muscle, adding the speed, adding the power. I’ve already talked about it with the Penn State strength staff, that’s something that I really want to focus on to bring my game to the next level.”

Meyer hit 85 percent of his field goals at Tulsa

Meyer finished 17-of-20 on field goals for Tulsa after winning the job in camp for the Golden Hurricanes. His long last season was a 47-yarder against Tulane. He also kicked a 37-yard game-winner against East Carolina with under three minutes remaining in his team’s season finale last month.

With kickoff specialist Gabe Nwosu expected back next year as well, Meyer believes he can focus on the strongest aspect of his game.

“I think I’m a pure field goal guy,” he said. “And I think they’re bringing me in because I’m a real accurate guy and that’s something that I can bring to the table. I would say 55 and in, I’m money. And I think that’s something that a lot of programs are now looking for again. Some programs bring in a guy with a huge kickoff leg. Penn State already has that. They knew what I can do, they know I’m a pure field goal guy who can kick off, don’t get me wrong, but having a guy that can come in there and anything inside of 50 coach said, we just want a guy that can go out there and we have no doubt in our mind that he’s going to make it. That’s really what I love to hear.”
