Another member of Penn State football’s Class of 2022 has arrived on campus. Wide receiver Tyler Johnson, an On3 four-star and the No. 11-ranked player in Virginia, is beginning his career as a Nittany Lion this weekend.

Announcing the move on Twitter, Johnson simply said, “State College” with a red pushpin emoji.

The arrival brings Johnson to a place he immediately knew he wanted to be with the Nittany Lions.

“I know Penn State is the best school for me,” Johnson told BWI upon his commitment last summer. “I feel like Penn State has something great for me. And I can get to the next level there and be developed. I really just feel like it’s a great place where I can showcase my talent, but there are also a lot of great people there. I just feel really comfortable with them. It’s the right fit.”

Tyler Johnson’s path to Penn State

Johnson was able to realize as much through a pair of visits in quick succession last summer.

Permitted to perform in an on-campus workout for Penn State’s coaches, Johnson impressed with excellent speed work. His 4.47-second 40-yard dash and 4.18-second shuttle caught the eye of the staff and, a few weeks later, an official visit cemented the Nittany Lions’ place.

“What stood out was the type of people the staff really were from the time I got there,” Johnson said. “I just felt a connection that felt like family, and I think that’s important, especially with me being a little ways from home. I feel like if I ever needed something I could go to any one of the coaches.”

Johnson chose Penn State over Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. They were the top contenders among the 16 programs that offered him during the process.

Johnson will be joined by Cornell graduate transfer offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad, punter Alex Bacchetta, offensive lineman Drew Shelton, and cornerback Cam Miller in his arrival this weekend.

On3 Scouting Report

“Johnson put up some big numbers at Magna Vista over the past two years, totaling more than 2,200 yards and 28 touchdowns on just 65 receptions. He’s not playing against Virginia’s top schools, but if he’s able to keep making plays when he gets to this level, schools up and down the East Coast will be wondering how they missed on Johnson. I know our staff at On3 likes what they’ve seen. We’re the only site out of the main three who rank him as a four-star.” – Ryan Snyder
