REPLAY: Purdue legends Mount, Schellhase guests on LIVE

Purdue All-Americans and scoring legends Rick Mount and Dave Schellhase join us for the Feb. 23 edition of Gold and Black LIVE. Brian Neubert leads off the show with his analysis of the Boilers win over Rutgers and looking ahead to Sunday’s game at Michigan.

Mount, who remains Purdue’s all-time leading scorer with 2,323 points 53 years after his Boilermaker eligibility expired, led Purdue to the Final Four as a junior in 1969. A two-time All-American Big Ten MVP, he came to Purdue as a schoolboy legend. Mount was the first high school team athlete on the cover of Sports Illustrated back in February 1966. Schellhase, who led the nation in scoring as a senior in 1966) is second on Purdue’s all-time scoring list (though Zach Edey is bearing down on both 1960s legends.

Schellhase is the author of his new autobiography, “The Schellhase Story,” and the Evansville, Indiana native details his basketball career and battle with alcoholism. Schellhase led the nation in scoring as an All-American in 1966. He was a first round pick of the Chicago Bulls and had college coaching stints at Purdue (grad assistant), Moohead (Minnesota) State and Indiana State. After a long career in higher and publication education, he now lives in Logansport, Indiana and is a season ticket holder for men’s basketball.

The interview with Mount occurred at Stookey’s a Thorntown, Ind. restaurant about 10 miles from Mount’s Lebanon home. Mount has hosted a small group of Purdue-related friends dating back years, a group that included former Boilermaker administrator and assistant coach Bob King. Mount was recruited to Purdue by King in 1966 after one of the most ballyhooed courtships in college basketball history. Mount celebrated his 77th birthday on January 5 and while he doesn’t attend games in Mackey Arena with the exception of his appearance for Rick Mount Bobblehead Night in January, 2016.
