WATCH: Raiders player stops play after finding foreign object on field

The Las Vegas Raiders had one of their players find a foreign object on the field before a snap in the second quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs. Defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson stood up to alert officials right before the ball was snapped, causing a moment of confusion for players and the broadcast crew.

Raiders find object on their field

In a funny moment during the second quarter while the Chiefs were preparing to snap the football, Jefferson stood up and began walking forward without seemingly any reason. As the Chiefs linemen looked at him in confusion and the officials whistled the play dead, Jefferson bent over and picked up what appeared to be a metal spoon or a pair of scissors.

The field was cleared and play continued, but it prompted the broadcast crew to discuss how the field was prepared before the game. The Raiders roll their field in to swap out the playing field for different events, leading the broadcasters to speculate that the item had been there since the field was unrolled and set up for the game.

While the strangeness of the moment broke some of the tension during the game, the stakes of their division rivalry game brought the focus right back onto football. Entering Sunday night’s game, every team in the AFC West had five wins.

The Denver Broncos and the Las Angeles Chargers both lost on Sunday, and the winner of the Chiefs and Raiders game would determine who is in first place after Week 10.

Facing more off-field distractions

Jon Gruden is now suing the NFL and commissioner Rodger Goodell, according to a report that was published on Friday afternoon.

“Through a malicious and orchestrated campaign, the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell sought to destroy the career and reputation of Jon Gruden, the former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” the lawsuit stated.

While there was limited information released in the initial report, the lawsuit states the NFL took countless steps to ensure Gruden was ousted.

On Friday, Adam Hosmer-Henner, the attorney representing Gruden at McDonald Carano, issued a statement.

“Jon Gruden has filed suit against the National Football League and Comissioner Goodell in the Eighth Judicial Court in Clark County, Nevada. The complaint alledges that the defendants selectively leaked Gruden’s private correspondence to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times in order to harm Gruden’s reputation and force him out of his job. There is no explanation or justification for why Gruden’s mails were the only ones made public out of the 650,000 emails collected in the NFL’s investigation of the Washington Football Team or why the emails were held for months before being released in the middle of the Raiders’ season.”
