College Football Playoff to consider new "Penn State rule": strength of conference schedule

The headline of the article is misleading. Nobody called it the "Penn State Rule" and Dinich is the person who referenced Penn State. It's funny to me Dinich wants to frame it around Penn State. The OG crappy conference schedule making the playoff was 2024 Indiana. Yeah, her alma mater. I doubt she'd want to get into that.

So, let's say PSU has an amazing season and ends up in the CCG and plays Oregon, IU or Ohio State. Does playing one of those helps, win or loss?

What if Oregon tanks this year and is not a strong team and does not make the CCG? Or IU?

Conference strength of schedule is not an important issue until the dust settles.

This is news? 10-2 might not get it done. That's been speculated since the schedule was published.
It's early in the season, but Michigan, USC and Washington (to date) have not done anything to paint the picture of Big Game Opponent (unless you only see blue and white). If everyone you beat during the season has 3 or more losses, it's a factor. What's the antidote? Go 11-1. 11-1 gets you to the conference title game and win or lose you are in the playoffs.

10-2 and a loss in the conference game does not guarantee a bid. PSU with losses to, lets say USC and Michigan (both with 3 or more losses) as opposed to an SEC team at 10-2 with a win vs a top 10-12 team will take the spot.

Didn't she once work for the Centre daily times?
Yeah. She was with the CDT when Kelly Mazzante became the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten basketball. I think it was the 2003-2004 season. When she passed Calbert Cheaney (Indiana), Dinich (IU alum) threw a hissy fit about how Mazzante shouldn't be celebrated as the all-time leading scorer since her record couldn't be placed alongside the all-time men's leading scorer. Of course, everyone knew the difference between the men's game and women's game. Nobody claimed Mazzante was more talented than Cheaney. Nobody claimed Mazzante would beat Cheaney one-on-one. It was simply a matter of points scored. Still, Dinich wrote some articles crapping on Mazzante's accomplishment. It seemed she was going out of her way to prop up her fellow IU alum.

Cheaney is still the Big Ten men's all-time leading scorer. Mazzante is now #4 on the women's side with Caitlin Clark at #1. I wonder if Dinich looks down on Clark the way she did with Mazzante.

Well, either Oregon or OSU already is guaranteed a two loss season, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Oregon loses its second game of the season tomorrow before they even play OSU.

The simple answer is to get rid of the committee. There is no other revenue league I'm aware of that "ranks" teams to determine playoff spots/seeding. If the NFL can get by swimmingly without rankings, why can't college football?

If the conferences would actually put aside their pride and perceived superiority long enough to appreciate the long green, they could have a 12-game schedule featuring in-conference games and out-of-conference games, just like the NFL does, which makes "strength of schedule" meaningless. No more cupcakes.

A nice side effect would be that it would give hacks like Dinich something less to pontificate upon. My goodness, sportswriters might have to find a real job!

I really don't think that the shouting heads even would bring this issue up if, say, OSU didn't play IU, Oregon and say USC or PSU and finished 11-1 or 10-2. Because these conferences now have too many schools, every season, one or two teams are going to get the benefit of a perceived softer schedule. The powers that be in the Big 10 probably became apoplectic when they saw that the randomess of the schedule process didn't have PSU playing IU, Oregon and OSU.

Good idea, but the issue is PSU's conference schedule. Virtually everyone is now playing 3 cupcakes per season. One advantage is those million-dollar paydays to the victims float their programs. If the Big Ten went back to divisions, PSU would likely be paired with OSU and one of either Michigan or Indiana. While your idea has merit, I think we can all agree to be the best, you have to beat the best.

On another note regarding your post, last week, I was watching a Tennessee football show on the SEC Network and saw a banner in their indoor practice facility that says that they won the 1967 NC. I was curious about this so I decided to look up the 1967 Tennessee football team on Wikipedia and, indeed, it says that they were named as NC by something called Litkenhous despite having a 9-2 record.

I post this because PSU by all means should include 1994 as a NC season because they were named as NC by, according to Wikipedia, DeVold, Eck, Matthews and NYT, and co-NC by FACT, NCI and Sararin; I don't even know what some of those acronyms mean. Also, in 1994, there was no playoff.

Psu did acknowledge that as they had 1994 with the other championships in the end zone outside Psu board. Perhaps before 2001 remodel or a little after. Can’t remember.

Lets consider that Indiana in 2024 was a ten seed with a 11-1 record. Seems like they already take that schedule stuff into consideration. What it does mean is this. It PSU finishes with two losses and one of them isnt in the B10 championship. PSU isnt getting in at 10-2. That standard has already been set with a B10 team that had a poor conference schedule.

It's basically preordained that the Big 10 is going to be a four bid league, so it's just a matter of which four teams it will be. I have a feeling that Oregon will not be one of them this season.
Considering that the SEC only got 3 teams in during the 2024 season and the B10 only got 3 in 2025, I have a hard time thinking its pre-ordained that the B10 is ever set at 4 teams, especially if ND takes a slot and it appears they will this year.

You probably are right, but the Big 10 largely now rules college football with, to a lesser extent, the SEC, and I would think that they would put great pressure to have four teams selected, especially if that team is a 10-2 PSU or USC.

It's probably going to be a moot issue, because I don't see this PSU team finishing 10-2 or better.

That's true, but other than IU, Oregon and OSU last season, there really wasn't another Big 10 team that was worthy of consideration; I know that IU won the NC, but I thought that the Big 10 in 2025 overall was a mediocre conference. The year before, the Big 10 did have four teams, including a 10-2 OSU and even a 11-2 PSU. I'm not saying that it wouldn't happen, but I think that it would be very hard to leave out a 10-2 Big 10 team regardless of perceived strength of schedule.
