The field expands to nine teams because the tournament includes both the designated host team (Gaston Braves) and two full national qualifiers from Area IV (the regular champion Cherryville Post 100 and the runner-up Shelby Post 82). Because Shelby and Gaston County fall under the same athletic area, this created an extra automatic bid that raised the total field size.
