Is this his third year at quarterback? One bad game doesn't need to ruin your season.
Yes it's his 3rd year. Montini will be fine. They made a lot of terrible mental mistakes that were very uncharacteristic, which cost them the game. If they clean that up I think they finish 8-1 or 7-2.
Ramblers overcame a rough 1st half to win 33-19.
The overreaction of the night is that Montini will have no business being on the field with Rochester in the championship game at the end of the season
Watched the 2nd half and I blame the Montini loss on Sandburg being 100% up to the task. They looked good. Which is as it should be, no? A big 8A public with decent football against a much smaller school? Seemed like it was a good game.
Sandburg is very good and played a physical game. Montini turned it over repeatedly in the first half and looked like they were still on the bus until the second half started, which was much better. I really think this was an example of why its a bad idea to schedule a much weaker opponent in week 1 because it took a while to get used to the speed and physicality and by that time they were down 21-7.
I agree with 80sRambler. When one school is so much bigger than the other, sometimes the little things add up. Sandburg played a very good game. Montini was not as sharp as usual. Izzy was not as sharp as usual. The QB pressure was a little stronger than usual. Izzy’s escapability wasn’t as dynamic as usual. They didn’t tackle great. A couple drops, and terrible turnover, and Montini’s usual complete disregard for game situation and quality control all add up to a 7-point loss. Still, it seemed like they were taking control of the game a couple times. But Sandburg found a way to reclaim Uncle Mo. It has been a fun 25 games. I’ve seen most of them in person. Doesn’t get any easier, at Marist and at Naz the next two weeks.
Not a surprise. Sandburg has been on the up and up the last few seasons. Healthy feeder program, strong coach, plus a community that fully supports certainly helps.
I think a lot of stake holders got tired of some of the talent going to Marist, Providence, Rice, tbh.

Great analysis, I dont love the “chuck it up and pray” offense and guess it doesn’t work against 6 times their size. Not the gritty Montini you’re used to. Marist licking their chops right now
I’m with you there buddy. They had success with it last year versus Carmel and Rochester, but they go to the well way too much. It’s not like Sandburg was shutting them down all night. They were moving the ball. A couple drives were thwarted by super deep incomplete balls that felt unnecessary to me.
All that being said, I would’ve loved to see Izzy get the ball back with 30 seconds left and air it out a couple more times.
I understand how school size use to be a great metric but IMO it no longer holds the weight it used to. I would say its a variable but not the best indicator any more. Issue is the IHSA is lagging in coming sense. Admittedly I don't know the roster size comparison but I do know Montini's starting 22 are all would be starters at their respective 7A/8A publics which 95% of their roster is comprised from. So that alone doesn't surprise me that they can hang, play tough, and win most times vs "bigger" schools.
I seem to have missed that post. Who is saying Montini does not belong on the field if they and Rochester
make the state championship game? It’s week two. Seven games remain in the season. And then there’s the task of four games to make it to the final. And this doesn’t count for potential injuries and the fact these are all teenage kids. I’m perplexed as to why someone would say Montini would not belong on the field with Rochester . The only way someone could rationally say that is because it is highly likely Montini’s enrollment numbers in this current playoff bracket format would put them in 5A rather than 4A.Enrollment is a great method of classification for public schools.
