Let's hope Deacon Petras is ready to go - just in case.Hank Hecklinski is my guess.
Hank has not proven himself on the field at Iowa or Auburn. Each opportunity he has had to do that he has not done well. The problem is recency bias, what he as done people remember fondly, and it will be very hard to get that monkey off his back…Well, that's pretty damn sad if Iowa "fans" booed a guy who's never started a game at Iowa. Lester evidently thinks he's capable. People forget he came off the bench COLD, and had to make a play right out of the chute and he failed. It happens. It shouldn't define his career, unless thats what the rest of it looks like.
There aren’t gonna be any boos. JFCIf the competition really is dead even, I hope that the coaching staff has the sense to start Heck Game1. If Hank trots out for the first series, there are going to be boos. I know the coaches don’t care what fans think for the most part, but the season can’t start like that. The fans would be much more likely to warm up to Hank if he comes in off the bench.
Didn't realize you hadn't been to a live sporting event before. Yeah, it happens, even in Kinnick. I'm hoping that Hecklinski is the starting QB so we don't have to find out, but if Hank trots out there, I expect there will be at least a spattering of boos. Not from me, and I don't support it, but this is big-boy and big-$ football, and fans are becoming more and more likely to express their displeasure, and right now Heck is the fan favorite. There aren’t gonna be any boos. JFC
I think some groans maybe or something along those lines. I don’t expect boos. But whatever response he gets will be short lived with the anticipation and excitement among fans for the first snap of the season. Heck I feel like would be get nice applause on the other hand with lot more positive vibes.Didn't realize you hadn't been to a live sporting event before. Yeah, it happens, even in Kinnick. i am hearing that rhule is buying all the tickets he can to the iowa opener and sending ne fans to kinnick specifically to boo hank. depending on how hank is wired iowa could be down a qb in short orderI think some groans maybe or something along those lines. That's not quite accurate. At Auburn Hank played well in three of his four opportunities, including one start where he went 17-25 for 235 yards and 4 TDs. Unfortunately for him, he struggled in his second start, which was the last time he saw the field for the Tigers. Hank also played well for Iowa against UMass (5-7 for 55 yards and a TD).Hank has not proven himself on the field at Iowa or Auburn. Each opportunity he has had to do that he has not done well. I’ll just add that for all the talk we hear about Hank being the “consistent” one, who should be considered “the safe choice,” he’s sure had a lot of ups and downs in the times he’s played, with plenty of mistakes. That's not quite accurate. Your point about recency bias, though, is spot on. We don't see practice and all people remember are the Indiana game and the Kids Day scrimmage. For that reason, @MeetTheFerentzes is right that Heck should get the start. Plus, Heck ascended to QB2 last year behind Gronowski. If the best Hank has done is pull even, then he hasn't passed Heck to be QB1. My only caveat would be if Hank kicked a$$ this past week in practice and clearly took the lead.
I agree as I never booed a hawk in 65 years of watching them. Young guys playing a tough game and it is hard. mistakes happen and sometimes things do not work well. Why, in the name of God would any real Iowa fan boo, the guy picked by the coaches, and supported by his team mates before hes' EVER started a game at Iowa? Really? And that would be okay? And we think its just everything about the game that's screwed up.
Well it sounds like you were booing a coach and the head coach for having BRian be the OC. The coaches are fair game as they make big dollarsI’m usually very anti-booing for lots of reasons including the reasons you listed. It also comes across as very immature and entitled. However, I wasn’t against booing during the latter stages of the Brian days as it was a protest for change imo. And I do believe that contributed to his termination. The alternative is to not show up to the game at all…
you cheer the hero, you boo the villain...I agree as I never booed a hawk in 65 years of watching them. Young guys playing a tough game and it is hard. mistakes happen and sometimes things do not work well.
I would boo any player even a hawk if they were a dirty player. by the way I have booed the refs in kinnick
There you go with a slap to the players. Yeah Deacon was bad but Petras was good enough when he had an above avg Oline and good running game to protect him and mask his slowness.Let's hope Deacon Petras is ready to go - just in case.
Since a Deacon Petras doesn't exist and is a fictional character isn't it possible that my post was intended to have a little fun around the situation? There you go with a slap to the players. Yeah Deacon was bad but Petras was good enough when he had an above avg Oline and good running game to protect him and mask his slowness.
Is it too much to ask for fans to have the sense to simply not boo?
If anyone boos the QB on the first series of the season, they should be slapped in the nuts.If the competition really is dead even, I hope that the coaching staff has the sense to start Heck Game1. If Hank trots out for the first series, there are going to be boos. I know the coaches don’t care what fans think for the most part, but the season can’t start like that. I don't disagree, but if you're at the game, and Brown trots out for the first series, get your slappin' hand ready....If anyone boos the QB on the first series of the season, they should be slapped in the nuts.
I agree that booing when a player trots on the field is bad....even if the booing is directed at the coach/coaching staff that made the decision. To everyone, it looks like the player is being booed. Although, I will say that in this day and age of college players getting paid more for one season that many people will make in their lifetime, it's not as taboo as it once was when they were "just" college kids.Well, that's pretty damn sad if Iowa "fans" booed a guy who's never started a game at Iowa. Lester evidently thinks he's capable. People forget he came off the bench COLD, and had to make a play right out of the chute and he failed. It happens. Meh, they will be quiet as soon as the first of many passing TDs arrives. This NIU game will tell us almost nothing about the QB competition, unless one of them craps the bed.If anyone boos the QB on the first series of the season, they should be slapped in the nuts.
I've just never understood booing a kid who joins the team, is evidently a good team mate, shows up for practice every day, and does his best. Maybe he doesn't do well, and he'll be replaced at some point, but its highly unlikely he got that nod without a lot of hard work, and doing something worthwhile that the staff thought he could help the team be successful. A staff (Lester) who knows a lot more then anyone on here. Your original post was about people booing a team mate running on the field for his first start in an Iowa uniform. Sorry, if me thinking that's so far beyond nuts that an "Iowa fan" would do that.Glad you got that off your chest. Like I said, I don't support booing, but there will be at least a spattering of boos if Hank trots out for the first series.
AND, so if he's the choice you'd be okay if he gets booed the first time he walks out on the field as a starter in an Iowa uniform? And what does "what he's done people remember fondly" mean for Christ's sake? So, they were pleased that he struggled coming off the bench COLD in a game against the eventual National champion?Hank has not proven himself on the field at Iowa or Auburn. Each opportunity he has had to do that he has not done well. The problem is recency bias, what he as done people remember fondly, and it will be very hard to get that monkey off his back…
Please explain the "perform under pressure" part of kids day. It was a NO contact the QB scrimmage just like any other practice. Not saying Heck didn't show out much better on that day, BUT if Lester saw that one day as a difference maker at this point, we wouldn't be having these conversations.Another thing to consider if it is truly even:
1) Heck performed way better when given a chance in Kinnick. There is something to be said about being able to perform under some pressure.
2) Heck has another year of eligibility (3 more for Heck vs 2 more for Brown)
You don't think performing in front of fans doesn't come with some pressure? Especially when there's a QB competition going on?Please explain the "perform under pressure" part of kids day. You can't use kids day as a criteria for judgement. Just hypothetically speaking, let's say Brown needed to complete a 7 yard screen pass in the 4th quarter of a close game in Kinnick against a highly ranked opponent to win a game. You don't think performing in front of fans doesn't come with some pressure? Especially when there's a QB competition going on?
Not even close to an actual game when the bullets are flying and they're coming after you. Again Lester says its a dead heat until they get on the field in a REAL game. Why do people here think they're more informed? I just don't get that at all, and NO it has nothing to do with what happened in previous years. Different OC who appears to have the controls, and different QB's who for the first time in FOUR years have actually been in the system for more then a year. You don't think performing in front of fans doesn't come with some pressure? Especially when there's a QB competition going on?
I didn't use it as a criteria for anything other than asking the poster a simple question, "Does a Kids Day in front of fans not come with some semblence of pressure?" Y'all are reading way too much into it. If you don't think a Kids Day in Kinnick in front of fans doesn't come with pressure, then just say it. But don't put words in my mouth or assume I'm already pre-judging. The poster said it was just like any other practice and essentially doesn't come with any pressure. I questioned him.You can't use kids day as a criteria for judgement. Let's wait and see how he does in that situation to determine whether he can operate under pressure.
I didn't ask or say that it was close to an actual game. I simply asked if you honestly thought a Kids Day was "just another practice" or can you admit that it does come with some semblence of pressure. Not even close to an actual game when the bullets are flying and they're coming after you. I was joking. We already saw Brown in the exact situation that I described.I didn't use it as a criteria for anything other than asking the poster a simple question, "Does a Kids Day in front of fans not come with some semblence of pressure?" No not really. Sorry, just IMHO. The big thing though it doesn't matter what I think. It matters what Lester thinks and he's not putting much more weight on that scrimmage then any other practice.I didn't ask or say that it was close to an actual game. I simply asked if you honestly thought a Kids Day was "just another practice" or can you admit that it does come with some semblence of pressure.
