They’re obviously a lot better than last year, but they are not a good team or a team any B1G roster should lose to
They had former RU DC as head coach. He knew how silly RUs offense is and he knew RUs defense. RU went to sleep with expectations of easy win - trap game. Duff only one that could get anything done
Well, they’re better than Rutgers
No B1G team had ever lost to a Mid America Conference team before tonight. Zero excuses.

UConn grad here. Never thought I'd watch this game, but UMass played very well. I was impressed. They've finally gotten around to proper roster construction. They won in the trenches. They also played to win. Rutgers was playing to not lose and underestimated how much better the roster is now. UMass fans consider this game their biggest win ever in football.
That's the thing. How can the talent gap between the programs be that huge as it seemed tonight? There is no way UMass should have equivalent or better NIL resources. And yet, their player evaluation appeared to be light years ahead of a B1G program on both lines and most noticeably at QB.
Not true, Toledo beat State Penn 24-6 in Sept 2000. GS should be shown the door.

It is entirely possible that UMass will make the quantum leap to a mid-level MAC team, maybe even better. The 29 point spread was wildly unrealistic. That said, it should have been a fairly comfortable double digit win.
Ru has lost to at least 2 other mac teams in the past 20 years

People have short memories. Rutgers lost to MAC team Buffalo in 2018 by score 42-13. It was 35-6 Buffalo at halftime. Buffalo outgained RU 220-40 yards in the first half. Much worse than this game. The difference is that one was hidden on a week 2 saturday and this one was in front of literally the national CFB audience.
Don’t know but if they are it would just be another example of how the new CFB landscape on short notice could help a hapless program like UMass revive itself to some degree.
It was an inexcusable performance and it’s on the HC and staff. How can the first game of the year be a “trap” game? Nonsense. If they lose @ BC, they are in for a very long year and Zinn is going to have a lot on her plate.

The thing is, though, that Buffalo was laying 6 to Rutgers that day. They were undefeated on their way to 10-4; Rutgers was 1-11 and was in a Shea-esque rut.
UMass had lost 16 games in a row and was almost a 30-point dog tonight. I’m sure they don’t go 1-11, but how much could they have improved from last year? Enough to go from bottom-feeding MAC team to middling?
In full context, I’d say this was a much worse loss. I’m struggling to think of one that was so bad in the 35-40 years I’ve paid attention to Rutgers football, all things considered. 80-7 and 78-0 were abject humiliations, but I can’t clearly say they were worse, simply based on the opponent tonight.

He's right though and NY Post rarely publishes anything about RU ball one way or another. I hate to say it but GS just cant get anything lasting going with his tarded offenses. He could get a dozen 4 stars and still not have a B1G offense that challenges anyone. RU will always be a JV with GS and this is the first year I ever thought he should go. Raymond with 40 yds rushing and offense with SEVEN TFLs is just way too lame against a team the B1G varsity teams would have put away by the half
The biggest issue I have is that he has been in a regression ever since the back-to-back 7-win seasons in my sophomore and junior years (and even those two seasons were different in terms of which side of the ball f**ked up), before whatever the hell we all ended up suffering during the last season as a senior myself...
This is supposedly the first game for those of us newly alumni, as well as for those freshmen who just began their own journey here on the bank, and it was a total disaster in short..
Suppose this is all true and UMass is a top MAC team......
