Where is the crowd that anointed our shining new QB ?
Remember Greg said he is going to stand by his starter. Will be interesting to see if he reverts to old Greg, yanking his starter when he stumbles, or stubbornly stands by his choice. Quite the conundrum for Greg. But the answer is clear.

After losing to UMass all bets off as the season is essentially over.

Play the home grown kid - everything about the preseason prep should go out the window now.

That said - the QB choice was highly unlikely to change the game outcome. Even bringing AK back wasn’t changing how horrendous the run blocking was. 1.2 net ypc has to be a historical low. Probably have to go back to games like 78-0 to find a rush performance as poor by a RU team. It’s hard to beat anyone when you have no run game. Turner should take a ton of heat for this IMO.

Also note - if UMass wasn’t playing to run out the clock in the second half, we might not have forced a single punt the whole game. They dominated both lines after the first drive of the game.

100% correct. Both lines were man handed. I guess we're a long way from being the USC of the East as RutgersAl would often say. All that wasted NIL money for what we witnessed last night!!!! UMASS must have a ton of NIL money and a as$ kicking field house.

What was the logic behind playing Lonergan over AJ? It genuinely makes Schiano look like he's never coached a game in his life before.

And to allegedly spend money on him? That should be a fireable offense.

Greg said outright he was blindsided. He did not expect the OL (run game) to be what it was / is. My guess is that Lonergan would be an adequate (though uninspiring) game manager / pocket passer type on a team with a halfway decent run game. His arm looked fine as long as he has time. He will not have time, however, on this RU team and should not see another snap from here on in. At least that’s my opinion. We’re going to need to play the best pocket scrambler we have to give us the best chance possible of not getting blown out week in and out. And that’s not DL.

Being blindsided after about 20 years is just another reason he has to go.

does this surprise anyone? He has gotten every QB decision wrong besides last year. Rettig people were clowned but every QB decision by schiano is wrong.

im sorry our QB came in and turned it over FOUR TIMES AGAINST UMASS including twice inside our own redzone!! And it wasnt that the defenders made nice plays, he threw it right to them !!! Anyone who thinks Lonergan gets another snap is not serious

Lonergan looked scared as hell or maybe he just plays that way- he usually had plenty of time or if he just made a single step one direction or another, he would have been fine. He just seemed like a true freshman in his first start ever going against a team like OSU.

UMass won every single matchup on both sides of the ball. I have never seen a game like this where a team that for all means is a legit 30 point favorite just get manhandled.

I also saw nothing from this coaching staff on the sidelines either. From Greg down- looked like not a single one of them had a care in the world.

My Saturday's just freed up completely.

But Greggie took a lot of notes!!

That’ll pay dividends down the road..

As will the shroud of secrecy around the program so as “not to give our opponents a competitive advantage..” 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡

Face it folks, this guy is a clown and if he had any decency he’d resign. But for him it’s just a money grab. Just ask his family also on the payroll..

I wonder what the over/under on the number of quarters played before RU fans started screaming for the backup? Mine was under 1.

While I support the idea of throwing AJ out there to see what you have it is VERY CLEAR this team isn't a QB switch away from salvaging the season
Agreed but Dylan clearly wasn’t getting it done after the first series. What coach wouldn’t try something new in half two?? This wasn’t OSU we were playing and this wasn’t mid season.

I was shocked AJ didn't come out for the second half. That was malpractice, but classic GS. Dylan just needed to chop harder.

Schiano hates QB controversies. The mess over Dodd and Savage had Savage's parents ripping GS in papers. Then the mess between Dodd and Nova. Dodd had won BE Offensive player of the week his first start. next year Nova was stinking in a USF game but GS would never pull Nova (odd for a coach that hates turnovers so much). Finally the home crowd started booing Nova and GS had to put Dodd in. Dodd won the game with a circus catch by Sanu with a ball put in only place Sanu could get it (and not the DB). GS didn't want media writing about QBs this year and kept media at a distance. He has QB controversy PTSD

The only thing that had even a punchers chance of making a difference was adjusting the game plan to intentionally target KJ on every snap long even when he was double covered. KJ has the unique ability to shift gears and act like a cornerback when he’s outnumbered to protect the possession. That’s what we should’ve done - with either QB. No passes to anyone else unless they were wide open. Every pick was thrown to someone other than number 8.

I just don't see how you start Lonergan. He could been picked off 2 more times by my count last night. He looked completely incapable of being out there. Maybe he's just a totally different player in practice than game day.

I guarantee Greg starts Lonergan.
Hopefully Lonergan can’t go and there’s no drama in the decision. 70% of the snaps should target KJ. 20% (one in 5 snaps can be handoffs just to give KJ a break). Mix in a couple other things here and there to keep D honest. Simplify the pay book when you have a star like KJ. That’s it.

The “QB controversy” is the least of Greg’s problems right now. Both lines suck beyond reasonable imagination. He talked up how these units were the best he’s had under 2.0 and it was obvious he actually believed that too. He had no clue how bad we were going to be. This parallels when Pike said he had his “best team ever” and opened the season needing OT to beat Lehigh and then losing outright to Lafayette. But the difference was - he actuallly turned that season around and we beat a bunch of ranked teams to get back on track. The disparity in football is way bigger than basketball which is a sport where any team can on a given day get hot from 3 and pull an upset.

The only bright side with the defense in this case is that USC and Michigan’s offenses won’t be able to do all that much more damage than UMass’s even with more talent because it’s pretty hard to score more than every single time you touch the ball (and only one FG in the first half). By the time UMass punted the game was over.

It’s actually near the top of my list. Seriously reminds me of when Pike proclaimed “best team ever” before that Lafayette loss but that on steroids. It wasn’t like that Pike team didn’t have talent at all 5 positions. They just didn’t gel early. It’s actually scary that Greg didn’t realize how bad we were going to be in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

But right now, giving Flaherty the boot after he came in and made Rutgers OL servicable for the first time in 10 years and replacing him with someone with controversial past behavior - FOR THIS??? That should be the top storyline in my opinion. I’m surprised it’s not getting more public focus. We rushed for 30 yards against UMass. When was the last time we were held to that few rush yards in a game? I bet not once under Flaherty and this was UMass - not OSU!!!!

If that's really what happened then that would be up there with tackling the QB on a knee down with Bucs. RU's OL became fun to watch as teams would be praying for mercy by 4th as defenses wilted and Monangai was on the loose all over the place

It’s not speculation. It was public information that Flaherty’s departure was not voluntary. Schiano felt it was time for a change.

It’s not like we mass overhauled the OL either. Most of our starters are back, and Chin earned a spot on the first team for Flaherty before his injury. And THIS WAS UMASS.

The fact that Jim Turner has a shady past is besides the point, but makes it even worse.

Greg is just weird sometimes. Calling a TO with 40 seconds to go in 1st half with 45-0 lead on Norfolk (2007) and getting Teel hurt, Having Bucs tackle Eli on a game ending kneel down. Its amazing that a team with an awful OL for years in a row finally develops an OL and Greg gets rid of the coach (who won 2 Super Bowls). That's a Schiano thing for sure - like not fixing red zone for 20 years. Things like that are why I know GS will never get over the hump. He was great for getting stadium built and helping RU get into B1G but I can't roll with the spectrum football

AJ only plays if Greggy and staff invent an “ injury” for Lonerghan
It doesn’t matter unless the diff between the 2 QBs are Surace on his own deciding to just throw to KJ and Lonergan not do that. We’re not going to be beat anyone unless that’s the new game plan. Even then it’s a long shot. But the lines don’t look good enough to have a chance any other way. If we could only rush 30 yards on UMass we have to assume we have no run game because run blocking is terrible.

I agree ! I’m just saying if the coach goes all camp and waits to announce the QB. He can’t after 3 1/2 quarters make a change., It will further shine a light on his incompetence

In all of sports, quarterback may be the position where practice performance is least indicative of game performance.

Well the lines may have been talked up in camp cause they both sucked lol.

I will be curious how they come out against BC.

this is one of the thing that really concerns me. I commented in the game thread that I am not totally confident DL really understands the offense.

In the post game podcast, there were a few references to the gamesmanship by UMass knowing how the Rutgers coaches call the game. Not a great situation for a new starting qb - especially one who is unable to adjust because he can’t be the extension of Kirk…which in itself problematic in the modern offense.

It also bugs me that Schiano picked the more experienced quarterback with an unimpressive track record over the home grown kid with high upside.

He said it was very close which certainly allows room for a change based on poor performance in the first game. If I was Greg, I personally wouldn’t want Lonergan anywhere near the field against BC after this loss even if he hadn’t turned the ball over so much. We have enough story lines now and don’t need for Lonergan to be going up against his old team.
