Saw this on the TV listings. How did college football ever survive before Kirk Herbstreit?

I still don't understand the Herbstreit hate--dude works as hard, if not harder than anyone, is calls a great game. He's actually knowledgeable about all teams and does the work
Is this show stupid? Yes, our course it is.
Was it cheap to produce and got viewers? Yes, of course it did.
What's the harm here? Oh no, there's a show you likely didn't watch

If Herby would just shutup and let the fans enjoy moments in the game, I could tolerate him. But when you listen too him, he has to fill every single second, constantly yapping like an annoying little dog.

It's a homer, but Blackledge is much better. Same insight, doesn't have this need to take every horse out of his barn, one at a time, and run them around the field.

I’ve always like Kirk Herbstreit. I got to serve both him and Chris Fowler at the Tavern back in the JoePa era and they couldn’t have been any nicer. Great men.

I think he’s actually pretty good weeks one through 12. But it’s like a switch turns on once you get to those last two weeks of the regular season and he goes into straight Homer mode.

You say that because Blackledge went to Penn State--most fans would pick Herbie but they're the top 2 regardless but neither is MUCH BETTER--you may like a different style but that doesn't make him much better. Blackledge also prepares for 1 game a week--what Herbie does is far more impressive.

Yet Ohio State fans will tell you that he doesn't support them enough
I think it's odd people don't understand that, at times, he's playing things up--that's what his job is. It's why Herbie is making 15-20M a year.

I rarely watch the goofball studio pregame shows as they are just too over-the-top for my tastes. They all become an echo chamber and simply state the obvious. When it comes to color commentary, I'd put Herby behind Blackledge and Klatt but everyone's mileage may vary.

He's more knowledgeable than any--you don't have to like his style to acknowledge that. Blackledge is a close second while only preparing for a single game a week. I'm not saying you have to like him or prefer him over Blackledge (personal preference) but he's earned credit/respect.

I don't blame you for not liking studio shows-I'm not watching GameDay today...nothing to do with Herbie but it's a weak slate of games and I limit how often I'm dealing with McAfee being McAfee. In general, they're annoying--gotta change channels sometimes lol. That's part of Herbie's brand. There's a reason Amazon is paying him as much as they are for 1 game a week. It's not charity--it's because he's widely considered the best.

I just wish Herby would stop filling every second with commentary during the game. Many times, less is more. Let people digest the play. He's like the guy sitting next to you at the bar constantly in your ear, blah-blah-blah-blah.

Well they drove him out of the Columbus area. My practice associate lived next to him in the Powell, Ohio area (Wedgewood development) and the typically crazed O$U fans would show up at his doorstep on weekends when he was away from home doing game broadcasts. Since that development had to rely on the county sheriffs for law enforcement protection with long response times, they moved away to be closer to Columbus. It was scary for his wife with small children during this time when nut job fans were randomly showing up at their home.

After they moved to Upper Arlington (suburb close to the University) they still were getting bothered, but they had town police that could show up to herd the crazies away. But finally when Herbie came back after a broadcast trip (when he had said something some of the fans didn’t appreciate), he found his effigy hanging from a tree in his front yard. That prompted their move to Nashville.

This is fair--and why you like Blackledge better. It's all personal preference in that regard
Also, let's be real--while you and I probably want to just watch the game (I'd love more/better replays) the large majority of the fans have no clue what's happening--this board shows that on game days lol

Correct--people ignore/forget this--I didn't know all the details but I knew it was bad
