This actually makes it even worse and more farcical.

Its bad enough when they say that the refs & replay use the "Hawk Eye" system to determine time is left, but that says that the final ruling is made by someone who is not even THERE!

Just mind blowing nonsense that happened.

Check this out, from the linked article:

The Big Ten stood by the review in a statement released two hours after the game, when it also published a recording of the replay as it was reviewed by the officials that showed the game clock at one second when the ball was touched by WMU's Micah Davis.

"It was determined Western Michigan No. 18 started his jump from an established out-of-bounds position [left foot] and made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock," the conference said, citing the rule that stops the clock on such contact.

Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon Steinbrecher
said the conference and school contacted the Big Ten office, seeking clarification on the review, and were provided with an explanation along with video and audio that confirmed it. Steinbrecher thanked the Big Ten for its prompt response.

Didn't Oklahoma, of all teams, lose to Oregon in similar fashion when Stoops was still coaching about 12+ years ago, maybe more?
Yeah, it was an onside kick that the Oregon players acted like they recovered the ball. Refs pointed their way while an OU player was behind the pile with the ball in his hands.

Time to put a digital, extremely accurate clock on the replay starting from the instant the center starts to hike the ball. My guess is that it would show over 10 seconds elapsed before the ball was touched.
Oh, and where are all the up-close pictures that one usually sees when something like this happens. All I've seen are pictures from atop the stadium.

Fans and media need to keep this alive all year and refer to Michigan as 0-1 and WMU as 1-0 at this point and then throughout the season. NCAA and BIG will hope the frenzy dies down, but instead it needs to increase until it’s actually addressed correctly.

We basically have WWF wrestling (saw another poster aptly refer to that) with the narrative controlled by money rather than integrity.
At least in wrestling we know it's scripted...

Several thoughts voiced elsewhere, such as WMU should have just gotten a PI to prevent the ball getting as far as it did on the previous play, shouldn't have gotten too cute earlier, etc.

What MAY we start seeing if scenarios continue? How about the defending team just leave the field and say, "The game is over. Take it to court if you disagree".

Another question I saw: why was there no PAT attempt? By rule, if the outcome of the game can be affected by a PAT try, the PAT try must take place. Face it, if any team could screw that up by giving up a 2-point PAT return, it's Michigan.

The refs dont keep a clock on the field that is accurate as to whether the ball is touched behind the endzone with 1/2 second left. They cant hit their stopwatch that fast
On Sportcenter the guys said there is a clock that the replay guys use, and then there is the clock in the stadium that everyone see's Supposedly they are linked. They he said that it takes miles of cables and connections from the truck to all these clocks and that its possible that the clocks could be off by a half second or so. Kind of like when you have two TV's in your house and you can have the same show on, and one may be a couple of seconds off watching the same show. He said someone will have to explain all of this , but we all know nothings going to come out of this. At least ESPN questioned it, (naturally they would be fine with Michigan losing). The Final Drive on the B1G was embarrassing. They basically acted like there was no controversy at all there must have just been more time on the clock.

Yeah sure, just like they explained the illegal fair catch fiasco. Literally the first thing I thought of when I watched this ending. It remains one of the rarest penalty calls in the history of football, a penalty call off a replay review off a bouncing ball that cannot be fair caught lol.
Actually the REAL issue with that was, supposedly the review booth can ONLY review the issue the refs were looking at. In that case the refs on the field said they thought CDJ stepped out of bounds going down the sideline, which the review showed he did NOT. Then the review officials in a remote location went through the rule book to come up with that obscure hand wave rule, which was pretty unclear if he actually did that at all.

That sure isn't what he said in either the onfield interview or in the post game presser. He said, "when I looked up, I thought there was still a second left, but its not my call, and the refs said there was still one second". I guess he had a few seconds to "get his story straight". Not like he was going to say, "well , I thought we should have lost and WM got screwed".

The B1G office already weighed in and said "the review clearly showed that the ball was touched out of bounds by a defender before the clock expired" They cited rule number 4-3-2a, for that case. They forwarded this to the MAC office and they issued a statement concurring. athat, athat, athats all folks....

HOLY CRAP. I do not believe wha I just read. the sanctimonious Big 10 just admitted to making a mistake?
No, he said "on Monday." As in that the B1G would admit fault later but that it wouldn't matter.

That's the way replay works across ALL platforms, you realize that right. Its the same as that in the NFL which is the model the B1G and everyone uses. In the NFL the official is in New York. In the B1G he's in Chicago.

Not. That was FF, saying what he "thought "they should say. That's not a comment made by the B1G conference office.

If they had walked off, the refs would still have put .01 on the clock and it would have been a forfeit.

Michigan, the Big Ten, and college football should be absolutely embarrassed by this outright criminality. Western Michigan was robbed in broad daylight before over 100,000 people in the stadium and a large TV audience. Everyone knows it. Of course, Michigan is known for cheating. How anyone can even try to justify this despicable officiating is beyond me. Michigan is disgusting. I hope the Hawkeyes bring the karma when they visit them. Damn, that's just so pathetic.

Michigan was a 27.5 point favorite

And they were about to lose by 5.

Then the refs put back a second on the clock.

And this happened:

It was no miracle. It was highway robbery. Ho-ly hell . . . Can you imagine how you'd feel if they did that to Iowa? Think back to the Minnesota game and DeJean's TD return that won the game . . . until it was wiped out by the review booth. Western Michigan went into the Big House and won . . . until they got cheated. OMG.

How embarrassing.

Michigan and cheating are the same thing. Look it up. Harbaugh or no Harbaugh, the Wolverines cheat. They even have to cheat to beat Western Michigan. The football gods should be ashamed of themselves. We know Michigan won't be.

Without question this was a mess, and a damn shame for the WM who played a great game, the only way they could probably had a chance to win.

Having said that, while I despise Michigan and their history of cutting corners, (cheating) whatever, they did not cheat in this case like quite a few people said. The refs, (on and off the field), and the system if you will screwed this deal. If the same thing happened at Kinnick would we expect Kirk to tell the refs, "No, I think the clock expired, so we'll just head to the locker room"? Of course not.

Yah, you mean how the whole freakin' country is in the grips of a dictator? Maybe we should keep that narrative alive too. Everything is bullshitt.

The folks in Chicago had the final say.

The replay supervisor at the Big Ten Football Review Replay Center has final authority on reviewed calls during games at Big Ten stadiums.

How Decisions Work

    • On-Field Ruling: The game referee makes the initial call on the field.
    • Review Process: During a review, the replay supervisor communicates via headset with the field referee.
    • Final Authority: The replay supervisor makes the final ruling for replayed decisions.
Sure. How'd that Iowa-Minnesota game turn out after DeJean's "game-winning" punt return for a TD? LOL

Can you imagine being a player and coach, thinking you just won the game, and then they put that second back on the clock?

If that happened to Iowa, this message board would melt down. LOL
Well, it did kinda happen to Iowa. Don't you remember the DeJean punt return that was disallowed by the review booth and cost Iowa the game?

That's just so stupid. None of that has anything to do with what happened last night. On the play in question HOW did Michigan cheat? If it happened at Iowa would you really expect us NOT to run that play again if the refs said there was time left? I can hate Michigan and still say, NO coach would just walk off if the refs said there's still time on the clock. NO coach, or he;d get fired the next day, and his fans (including the ones on this site) would destroy him.

Then Whittingham should forfeit the game. He knows it was wrong, so be one of the greatest heroes in college football--hell--sports history and take the loss. Refuse to accept the cheating. Show that you value integrity over winning. Coaches say that all the time. He would be revered by all honest and decent people everywhere. It would be the greatest thing Michigan has ever done. And it would be right. Michigan didn't deserve the "win," and W. Michigan didn't deserve the "loss." Go ahead, Whittingham. Do it. Show the world what decency and integrity really mean.

They wouldn't be implying it, they would be admitting it. There's no reason in the world that this result should stand. NONE. When a "mistake" of this magnitude, a "mistake" this obvious occurs, there's only one right thing to do: Admit it, and change the result. It's pretty damn simple. And if the University of Michigan had any integrity at all, it would demand that result. It would forfeit or whatever is necessary to ensure Western Michigan received the victory it spent 60 full minutes earning.
