The ONE Play That Defines the New Matt Campbell Era

Rocco Becht lines up in the shotgun. Brings Andrew Rappleyea back to line up as a second RB to help in pass protection. Ball is snapped—primary target is James Peoples out of the backfield, but he is tripped by his own guy and falls down. Koby Howard is the second option, he ran a stop route but is double-covered. Ben Brahmer runs a deeper stop route and is double covered. Chase Sowell runs a fly route and is man-covered by one defender with another covering zone. The pass protection appears to break down and Becht looks for a lane to scramble, but there isn’t one.

Adversity. This is what Matt Campbell preached all off season. What do you do when things go wrong? And he promised, they will go wrong at some point.

This was that point. Everything went wrong on this play. So what did they do?

The offensive linemen and Andrew Rappleyea never gave up, they repositioned and took control to solidify the pocket again. Rocco Becht recognized that and reset his feet. Koby Howard knew his QB needed an outlet, so he snuck behind the two defensive players who were covering him and emerged into an opening. That wasn’t a route he ran in the second half of the play, it was improvisation. It was backyard football. Becht lasered it just out ahead of him so he could catch it in stride and from there, he took off for the end zone. Touchdown Penn State!

And this is what felt different about this team compared to last year. Read the first part again and ask yourself what would have happened when the play disintegrated like that?

I can think of two things, either the QB would underthrow it to Sowell on the fly route hoping for a pass interference, or he would scramble. But worse than that, the WRs had specific instructions and never deviated from them. If the play broke down, they’d stop. But not just them. If the RB fell down, he was done. If the linemen didn’t get their initial block, they’d never reset. There was clearly a script for everything and not much room for improvisation. Everything had to go right. It had to be perfect. No room for mistakes. In the past, if the play worked, we got yards. If it didn’t work, the play died. I say this at the risk of making this another pissing match about the new vs the old guy, which I don’t want to do—but I think THIS play showed us a lot of what we’ve been missing in all of our games, especially the big ones. Let’s hope we see a lot more of this down the road. Especially in big games.

Good observation. One of the weaknesses of a young QB is they look to escape the second that things look to be breaking down instead of hanging in the pocket where all the protection is and going through their progressions. You see it all the time where a QB will start to scramble and get brought down when if they just climbed the pocket a little bit, they'd be clean to get a throw away. As soon as Becht looked to scramble and then stopped, I was thinking 'yes, stay in the pocket where the protection is' and then delivers that dime. I'd bet that previous OC's and the last WR coach that stole money from PSU probably didn't teach their receivers to improvise as you also assert. Yesterday was very refreshing from a WR perspective in that they were getting open AND the middle of the field was used a lot more than much of the last 10 years.

Will we get another play, down the road, like in the second game he coaches that will redefine his era?
LOL

Well we do have the key word “New” in the thread title, so this is more of a starting definition or an opening statement. The canonical Campbell era-defining play is out there ahead of us somewhere. I’m looking forward to watching for it to unveil itself over the years to come :)

I agree but those things are easier vs weaker opponents. Marshall was predicted to have a good offense but they were also predicted to have a bad defense. Let's see how they hold up to the pressure that teams like Michigan & Wisconsin have.

The biggest positive to me was that we played with enthusiasm, TEs & WRs stayed on their blocks, the defense was in position and tackles were wrapped up, not attempted by just lowering shoulders. I also liked how Cambpell got a lot of reserve players into the game before the 4th quarter.

We're 21 pt favorites over Temple and I'd be disappointed if we didn't win by more than that. Temple beat Rhode Island by 24 but 14 of those came on pick 6s. Temple didn't have a huge edge in total yards and first downs. I realize the game is on the road but PSU should dominate. Mason is a good RB who had 158 yds against RI but we'll probably hold him to 70 yds. Smolik split reps vs RI and didn't do much. I could see Zay Robinson run back a kick in this game. I'll say 38-10.

I believe the posters point is that from the very first snap of the game the offense and especially Becht played with confidence snd was under control, even when the play broke down. Obviously the experience of Becht is reflected in the change.

Besides the hyperbole of the thread title, as a former coach, how do you feel about the details laid out in his post?
I was impressed with a largely clean effort. False starts, encroachment...too many- not enough players on the field or timeouts due to confusion due to personnel packages were all avoided and often characteristic of game 1 jitters. This is a veteran team and they performed as such.
As for judging schemes or individual skills and talent, it would behoove us to tap the breaks till game 5 when athletes of equal skill and abilities face off. Until that time pass rush and a dynamic running game would be my concerns.
Given the schedule and what was a promising debut Saturday, I'm still optimistic that barring catastrophic injury, 10-11 wins is possible.

You know instead of being a sour old bitter widower.....you could actually stop trying to be an active a-hole when someone takes the time to break a play and spends time with it. Oh.....and MAYBE, just MAYBE go back to rooting for the actual program instead of dead or fired coaches because your butt was hurt.

All true and wouldn't we expect that from the most experienced college QB in the nation? Especially against a Sun Belt opponent. If we see the same vs USC then this team can be destined for a playoff berth. I don’t think Marshall or Temple will reveal much.

The one thing that stood out to me was how well the defense tackled for a first game. Even more so the ISU guys in particular. I think I only really saw one hit with no wrapping where they "missed" the tackle. Everything seemed to be calm, but him bringing over most of his staff along with a seasoned DC seemed to help there. It's only game one and plenty of bumps in the road to come, but it was really was a very solid all around debut. Hope they keep it rolling for a bit.

Apparently Campbell practices tackling. Franklin did not because of his injury paranoia.

Thank goodness we have a coach who practices the fundamentals. That was ths best tackling from a Penn State team that I've seen in years.
Of course it was. It was definitely because the new coach knows how to teach tackling. Precisely what is injury paranoia? Or is this just another example of fanboy fantasy?

Paranoia may not be the right term. In any case, Franklin's practices were not very physical and his teams reflected that on game day.

Yes, they never won a game. But after 1 contest vs. Mighty Marshall all is well.
Did I say they never won a game? And its a fact that Franklin's teams were not physical. And don't be ridiculous. Everyone on here knows who the competition was on Saturday. But shame on us for praising the team a bit for the win.

Oh thank god people like you still exist. I thought they won the NC because of this ONE post on ONE play......holy crap. You mean it was Marshall we played too.....holy crap I thought it was Oregon due to the green. Better to have a posts full of an ex high school coach crying 9 months later daily because his little "guy" got fired and he has acted like an utter a-hole since then.

But hey thanks for explaining we didn't win the NC on Saturday. You can usually read the room....most get that it's the first game in a series of tune ups, but it's also ok for folks to talk about some of the differences they noticed too....good and bad....just not a lot of bad to knaw on yet....but I'm sure it will come soon enough.

It's a fact Franklin's teams weren't physical? Or is it a popular opinion of the BWICAC? Because I never played against them. DId you? I think it would be an incredible feat of coaching genius to have seasons with 10, 11 and 13 wins and not play "physical. " But after 1 game vs. Marshall we are labeling this team as "physical. "

For someone who fancies himself as a realist, I find it odd that you are unaware about the lack of physicality of Franklin's teams. This was standard commentary on just about every sports media outlet. Franklin's teams were fast and athletic, but struggled in the trenches against big physical teams.

The reality is that they were physical enough to win 10 or more games 6 times and finish top 10 in the nation 5 times. If failing to be physical in comparison to Ohio State or the last teams of the Harbaugh era is your argument, please list the coaches that "bullied" those teams. Standard commentary is the pablum fed to fanboys by sport journalists like rough and tough Paul Finebaum.

Enough with the strawman arguments. Our 4-21, 1-18, and 3-12 records are pretty good indicators that we just weren't physical enough or mentally tough enough to win more often or to hold two-touchdown+ leads in the 4th quarter.
  • Top-10 Opponents: 4–21 record (.160 winning percentage).
  • Top-10 Big Ten Teams: 1–18 record in conference games.
  • Top-10 vs. Top-10 Matchups: 3–12 when both Penn State and its opponent were ranked in the top 10.

What about the 10 win Illinois team PSU beat in 2024? Perhaps the problem is not Franklin but you. Crying about a 7 overtime loss with a banged up QB 5 years after the fact is actually pretty pathetic. Keep in mind that PSU blew the doors off of Washington by halftime and beat USC on the coast in 2024. You and your BWICAC buddies are trying to portray them as big games. Perhaps it would be wise to support this coach and team on its merits....and not try to advance them as superior to what the previous coach achieved. You might be strolling blindly into a mine field. Especially with a recruiting class that's 6th or 7th best in conference.....a real Big 10 schedule is coming in 2027 and 28.

Who else was beating Ohio State and Harbaugh's final teams? No one. Franklin positioned PSU as typically #3 in the conference and under the current system would have made the playoffs 5 or 6 times. PSU will struggle to be #5 in the conference moving forward unless recruiting and NIL improve drastically. Good luck selling that turd as excellence at the highest level.
