Rutgers is NOT “ an embarrassment as a university”

Someone posted that on this board (I forget which thread, sorry). Ok, RU football lost a game as a favorite. I was there - season tix since 2014. That has nothing to do with the quality of the university, which is a fine academic institution. No NJ native should be denigrating Rutgers as a university. Yes, your sports are for the most part disappointing, but that is just a part of Rutgers, the college.

Unless you’re one of a very few schools, some sports are going to be a disappointment. example one for me: Penn State basketball.

BTW, I’m taking the trip up to Mass. for the RU BC game. Should be an evenly matched contest.

Considering silly football is not indicative of the quality of a university, of course RU is not an embarrassment. I mean Stanford football has sucked for a long time, yet they’re are one of the top universities on the planet. If you measure the worth of RU as a university based on a silly football squad, then that’s just super sad of you. PERIOD!

You do know we are one of the worst P4 athletic departments across all sports hence the very poor Director’s Cup standings nearly every year?

out athletics are a historic embarrassment for a major public university.

This has nothing to do with our academics which are still very good mostly due to the high quality of students that attend.

It’s a reflection of the shallow , entertainment driven culture in which we reside. Of course all alumni would like more successful sports programs, but in no way should it diminish the standing of a top notch academic school with an excellent faculty and student body.

Counterpoint- if you’re an outsider and see how inept we are at sports with all of the money we spend on them, it would be fair to wonder what else we struggle with.

As I posted elsewhere, my relatives in Ohio and Texas consider Rutgers a solid academic school. Of course I haven't talked to them since Thursday.

Overall the American public's opinion of colleges and academia have slipped quite a bit. Massive tuition increases, hostile students, monolithic ideologies and snooty attitudes in the NE (out west its not even a thing to even ask people where they went to college because most dont care) leave a lot of people behind. I think the Ivies took the deepest dive.

I don't think sport successes or failures hurt Rutgers. It might even be that colleges good at sports suffer more. Bad sports could mean students are more academic. I know there are college staffs that think that way. Some think hype over football success is a bad thing (while they charge 90k to rant about income inequality). A worse blot on Rutgers are the academics who are hostile and grads like Hasan Piker who calls for genocides.

I’m not an outsider. If people think a school is great because they have a really great football team, I think that proves the point I made above. What a school is spending on sports and its subsequent success or failure is a determining factor in whether some HS kid and their family decide that is the place for them? If so , I’m clearly from a long gone era.

I know you’re not an outsider, the embarrassing comments are coming from outsiders is what I meant. Sports are a great marketing tool for a university and unfortunately ours are awful.

No we aren’t. All Fans are welcome as each of us it’s a complete nutcase for our loyal following of a downright pathetic athletic department in nearly every sport for the last 50 years. Blips here ir there of relevance but every single one of suffers from RULoyaltyMasochism

all i know is we’ve been in the B1G for more than a decade … and there are sometimes 2 championships in some sports (regular season and tourney) and only 3 titles to date and non prospects this year other than maybe women’s crew

That people equate silly sports to the quality of an academic institution is so bizarre. I mean L$U is big into sports and they are basically a giant community college with a crappy academic ranking and bottom tier reputation. The same goes for many other sports successful schools.

This is NJ, land of the self loather.

We have people on this board who play down our rank, tied with UMD as the #1 public in the NE, that play up the University of Tampa and Clemson. Some send their kids there. Then say we shouldn't be in the B1G.

And they are aided and abetted by the media, especially NJ.com, who are looking for their next take down and bite of relevance hoping to join the national deranged attack on higher education.

My ask of these people is simple. Go the heck away, go root for that other amazing university and its ranking far behind us. Or, if you just hate colleges altogether, please turn down all the amazing medical research when it's your turn for a cure or help.

It absolutely is part of some kids reason for choosing a school. There's a reason the applications to SEC schools has become higher the last few years, that whole college experience with football Saturdays and everything that goes along with it.

I saw a stat yesterday that RU acceptance is 41% (comparable with Wisconsin and Illinois) and Cult is 55%. It's an aspect. But there is more to it. Most people are still going to college to learn, or at least develop socially and make connections, and RU is excelling there. We're tied with UMD for the best college in the Northeast.

A school like Vandy is awesome, but the current phenomenon is more the kid that can't get into RU and maybe not even Rowan and is going to Alabama because they saw it on TikTok.

Rutgers is not a total embarrassment but there are countless aspects of it that are embarrassing. Those who truly love the university will tell it like it is. The College Ave redevelopment is ultimately more important to the school's reputation than football results, yet it proceeds at a snail's pace. Who knows when the main campus will even have a dining hall?
