A PSU running back great, and a class act. You were too young Matt RIP and prayers up for the Suhey family.
Not to derail my own thread, but does anyone know how to take someone off "ignore?" It says I have "creamery freak" on "ignore" but I've never purposely put him or anyone else on "ignore." It's a little scary to me that I could have put someone on ignore without even realizing it.

Oh, this is sad news. Penn State football royalty. Matt Suhey was a legend. His freshman year was 1976 when I first started following Penn State and my Dad had season tickets. He deserved a title in 1978.

My prayers go out to his family that they find peace, comfort and strength through this.

Click on his avatar. Then click on “Unignore”. That will take him off the list.

I saw him play in Super Bowl XX in person with my dad. Watching that 85 Bears season and then the 86 Penn State season got me hooked as a football fan.

RIP Matt… I’m sure my dad is asking you for your autograph in the great beyond right about now.

A real kick to the gut this morning.
Matt was a fraternity brother of mine, and a good buddy back in the day. He was a favorite player of my young nephew, and always took time to talk with him when he would come up for a game.
Matt was genuinely a good guy all around. Got along with everyone. Great sense of humor as well.
A real loss for not only our Penn State community, but for whoever knew him.
Prayers for his family.

Crazy things like that happen on this sight. I went back to being a newbie somehow with an Anon handle. Go figure.

As we Penn State fans know very well....
- Matt Suhey scored a Bears TD in the "left side of the TV screen" end zone in the Super Bowl.
- We also know, without a doubt, that he broke the plane of that same goal line on that 3rd down play in the Jan. 1, 1979 Sugar Bowl!

Suhey was such an interesting "fullback" for Payton. He was in reality another Half back. He did the blocking like a FB, and he caught the ball like some of the better FBs but with the ball in his hands he was a Running Back. With Sweetness in the backfield, you would think that the Bears would have had a 255 lb. FB to block for Payton, but somehow Suhey was the perfect complement to Walter.

The Suhey family has to be considered one of the most Penn State Families ever.

RIP Matt.

Same graduating as me. This put things in perspective when you are the same age. I got to witness Suhey play football for 4 years and wrestle in IM’s. My HS class just had its 50 year reunion and we have lost 65 out of 465 members, most in the last 5 years. It’s eye opening for me as I don’t feel old, and now I wonder how many more of Suhey’s era teammates we will see pass away in the next few years.

Story on Matt from 2024 - NY Times, no paywall.

“We’re doing a new version of ‘Brian’s Song,'” Payton said. “The only difference is the Black guy dies.”

My Dad and I loved watching Matt Suhey. I remember as a kid being at the games with my Dad and when we faced a crucial 3rd and short he would always say.."Cmon Joe give it to Suhey" and tell me Suhey should get the ball.

A key piece of Penn State football history has passed away. Thank you Matt for your dedication and loyalty to Penn State and for making my early Penn State football memories so special. You will be greatly missed. RIP.

I've posted before how I long for the days of going to Penn State games back before all the games were televised and the game had such a better flow to it without all the television time outs and overbearing loudspeakers with loud music and someone telling you when to get loud as if we didn't already know. Back then the only sound effect was the Lion's roar and the sound of the Blue Band. Matt Suhey was part of those days I miss. RIP.
