The Good
- A win is a win is a win, and in the end, the final numbers looked decent, even though the game was much tighter than the score suggests. But, we hung 34 points and nearly 500 yards of offense, which is something we don't do very often in the post-Randy Walker era.
- The three-headed RB attack is intriguing. While it will limit individual accolades for our backs, the depth will be very important during a rough BIG schedule, and all three showed they are capable of making plays.
- Chiles will be in all three categories. The good is that he clearly has natural talent, with a strong arm, good elusiveness and an ability to make plays down the field.
- Offensive success in the redzone was exciting to see. Not sure if that was coaching or the threat of Chiles, but we struggled mightily with that last year and the backs and receivers are the same.
- On the flipside, while the defense bent, it rarely broke in the redzone.
- The DBs were mostly solid in coverage against solid, but not spectacular, wide receivers
- We were turnover free
- Robert Fitzgerald can tackle. And when he tackles, you know you've been tackled. He is fun to watch!
The Bad
- The line play on both sides was not inspiring, and this coming against an FCS opponent (I know, I know... they are one of the good FCS teams, but still.....). Chiles had a lot of pressure on his dropbacks, whereas we seemed to not get much pressure on their QB. Our four-man rush was not generating pressure.
- Chiles concerns me. He dropped back a lot and held onto the ball way too long. That is going to cause a lot of trouble once the competition gets better. I can't tell for sure on TV, but I worry he is one of those QBs that doesn't release the ball until he sees his receiver open. QBs can't do that at this level.
- A lot of sloppy penalties that are uncharacteristic for us. That is fixable at least.
- The Carsello injury was scary and would really be costly if he is out for an extended period. At least they reported it may not be as bad as they treated it on the field.
- All in favor of going for it on every fourth down no matter where we are on the field, say aye!
