when did they put in the field turf? they say that stuff really soaks in the heat…… was talking to a player at a kids day a few years ago about the heat and he mentioned the turf making it even hotter

Hottest game ever in Kinnick was 1994 against ISU. 102 actual temp. I think yesterday was 2nd hottest.
They have had field turf for a long time but you are right. In addition to the possibility that it's worse for injuries and possibly leading to cancer with the ground up rubber, it is ridiculously hot. I switch between grass and turf while coaching in the spring. The turf is easily 10-15+ degrees warmer and I'm guessing that's on the low end.
Thanks for the update. My friend said today it was assumed due to the severity of the illness it did not look like they were going to make it based on the info he had from other first responders. His info was second hand. Hope the person makes it out okay.
I don’t know the air temp, but the 1981 season opener against Nebraska was extremely hot and the hottest game I experienced. You could see the heat radiating up from the new Astroturf. When out on the field it felt like standing on hot pavement or sand.
That was the last season the band sat in the stands directly behind the team. I remember Sam Palladino telling guys to get off their feet and sit on the bench. No misters or other cooling units in those days.

That was the first college game I attended. I had this black Iowa long-sleeve shirt I had gotten as a gift that I wore proudly albeit hotly that game. I know it was hot but my memories are how loud it was and Reggie Roby.
Obviously, no one wants anyone to suffer from the heat, but the football teams played the entire game, but the band and cheer squads were removed from the stadium? Interesting. If it's that hot, then maybe the football game should have been delayed and played at night. TV runs the sports world, we know that, but still, this seems really weird.No reported death but the U pulled both the marching band and cheer squad due to the heat.

The university beer garden outside the south end zone was up and running 3 or 4 hours before the game, I presume? If so, does that mean that Iowa puts a greater priority on money than on people's health? If the beer was served, I imagine they told everyone to drink responsibly.
It seems like there is at least one super hot game like that every year for at least the last 10-15 years. It's not new.
Yes, my wife and I attended that 2013 game as well, and brutal it was. So again, Saturday's heat was nothing new. People either need to stay home or properly prepare, or the university needs to do the right thing and play the game at night, TV be damned.
Hottest Ol' Doodle and Mrs. D (no pic) have ever been was at the 2000 ERob Classic at Arrowhead in KC. Holy hell (almost literally)! People were dropping like flies. Entire stadium concession operation ran out of ice before halftime. Just brutal. Heat + enthusiasm + alcohol (for those partaking) + possibly improper attire can absolutely be a deadly combo. Sending positive Karma waves to the stricken band member.
I was also at that game. Maybe it's because I'm 26 years older but I thought the heat was worse this weekend. We sit in the east stands and the shade hit us just about as the game started. That made a big difference.

Sat through in sun from 30 minutes before kick to post game. Didn’t drink alcohol and kept downing water. Was soaked as if he had just run for an hour but was doable.
It’s an enclosed stadium that had soaked up sun all morning and afternoon and it just radiates it. Would not matter if it were grass. No breeze in there any more since closed up.
The PA announcer said at half time please go home if not feeling well. The team understands.
To be fair, there's mixed feelings in the scientific world on this. The ground rubber is made mostly of tires that have collected other carcinogenic materials. When baking all day in the sun, studies have shown that there are 10 carcinogenic materials that come out of the turf. A study from somewhere from 2016-18 (I can't remember now) in Washington looked at cancer rates in soccer players. There were around 155-160 players that had cancer and 110 were keepers playing on turf.
I think most of the data is anecdotal because they are still trying to figure this all out but this study on particular was raising red flags.
Artifical surface temperatures can reach 30-70 degrees warmer than grass fields when baking in the sun all day. It's a huge difference.

I was at that one in 2013. It was the first game my then fiancé, now wife, ever attended at Kinnick. Hotter but less humid than Saturday.

EDIT: I see the Michigan game record at kickoff held up by 2 degrees. I bet that Nebraska one was colder by game’s end though.
The family of the young man in HMB posted on social media overnight that he’s been in a coma since the incident and that they have made the difficult decision to removed life support. Word from the marching band is that they will likely cancel the rest of the season.
I hope anyone left out there with an attitude about heat illness being for “wussies” and people who are out of shape or don’t know how to take care of themselves can rethink their position. That could have been any one of our kids. That young man is a hero and a greater Hawkeye than any of us.

Heat is a dangerous threat to humans. Be aware.

The field turf is brutal this time of the year, just per my eyes multiple players were calling the dinosaurs. Minnesota LB, Nebraska D lineman, and the MSU right tackle. I'm sure nerves were involved, but reports from the field turf in Nebraska were that it was reaching between 140-150 degrees during the game. That's nuts.
Band uniforms aren't exactly built for heat and moisture management nor do they have cooling misters or trainers running up to them with gatoraide every time they run off the field. Sitting in the stands in those uniforms would be brutal.
Na, they don't make them wear those uniforms the it's this hot out, usually it's t-shirts and shorts.
You can be as smart as you want but sometimes the heat just gets you. You might want to rethink what you just said after this kid died.
100 percent agree, was there and I think I still have sweat running down my face, it was like standing on the surface of the sun type hot. Can't imagine field temp and playing in a game that day.
Read my long winded post earlier in the thread about being in the marching band that day and wearing our full uniform. They did not do a good job of taking care of us that day.
Absolutely hate that turf. Zero reason Iowa can't go back to a grass field with the resources they have.
