Coupled with my age its difficult remembering a player's name let alone his back story. Things evolve I'm happy I experienced the Pre-NIL era though. Eager to see what the NIL morphs into. Either it becomes unionized or ?

Told the wife this past weekend that I need to get a roster to see what guys were "Penn State" players and were the other guys are from.
I hate it and am hanging on by a thread with college football.
At the beginning of any CFB broadcast, announcers introduce a player, say what other teams he played for and move on to the next one. Really nothing else. 
Understand OP's frustration. But this is just not the way it is anymore. For HS (private/academy) and "travel" or "AAU" type environments, it has been a free for all for decades. Never forget that the players want this; they don't want school getting in the way of money, fame, and Instagram glory anymore. Coaches had it that way for decades. And now the players have it also, a purely transactional environment. Capitalism at its best and worst.
The wife is a Miami Hurricane. That fan base has absolutely embraced cheering for the jersey/school. The players are disposable; if you are good we cheer, if you stink, get out of here immediately so we can get someone better. Purely transactional. And the players are perfectly fine with it. PSU fanbase needs to do the same. Support the school and the program. Embrace the guys who are in those jerseys for however long they are here. Demand success and when it doesn't happen, clean house and start over.

I agree with the OP. I was accustomed to watching kids develop and hoping my favorites got their chance to shine. Now I won’t have time to learn their names before they play or become irrelevant. No more emotional attachments which of course can be detrimental to winning but will be something I will miss.
This happened with pro sports a long time ago. I lost interest in baseball. My interest in the NFL definitely took a hit. Now the interest is in fantasy football and prop bets and I don’t like either.

I as well. Unfortunately, what you describe has gone the way of rotary phone. Neither is coming back.
In the past I would yell: Get him Shane! Get him Trey! .......now I yell from my living room, Get him 24, Get him 19.
Don’t worry, it’s just a matter of time before PSU puts last names on the jerseys. Then we can “forget history” and remember names.
I was thinking…the concern about the annual fee agency is two fold (or someone please kind of correct my assumption) but a couldn’t a player with a lot of potential who is playing above his expectations be a risk to get poached? And the same time on the other end of the similar spectrum….couldn’t a player that’s just a little bit behind his expected trajectory but who has tremendous potential be poached?
I guess what I’m saying is “year over year is there new pressure (financial?) to keep players who are punching above their weight class and also players who are slightly underperforming…but have all the talent in the world” being taken by other teams?
Like for my own edification - can someone schools me in why or why. It every single year isn’t a total free agency overhaul-in what cases can we now know with concrete certainty that a player is absolutely locked on for a period of time?
Like, are these NIL agreements also chronological time requirements in terms of remaining with a team for a specified length?

I can't imagine the money will ever go away. The athletes won't let that happen. I don't even know how the NCAA could stop or limit transfers since regular students can transfer at will. The only difference is that regular students can't afford the cost and academic distruption.
Congress has a few proposed bills but they're struggling to get consensus. I read that the BiG and SEC are not going along with these proposals.
Maybe they should just eliminate the charade and call it a professional sport that just happens to be played on college campuses. No scholarships. Let high school kids enter a draft just like the NFL & NBA.

That opened the door for players to switch teams but at least they signed contracts that bound them to a certain team for a number of years.
Othani & Judge have 10 year contracts so fans know they'll be a round for a while. Also they can't opt out of the playoffs because they don't want to get hurt before heading to another team next year.
I printed off the numerical roster from the Athletic Department site. After a few plays, I learned the impact players’ numbers. I’m sure after a couple of games I’ll learn the starters and others who get playing time. I’ll cheer for whoever represents PSU in a positive way (both on and off the field). It appears the transfer players have bought in to PSU, so I’ve bought into them.

I like how D’Anton said there is no more ISU or others schools, they are all Penn Staters now. Still, I root for our guys to play well, but once they're gone, I really don't follow them unless they are specially.
I'd love to see PSU start a tradition of honoring guys who play their entire career at PSU. Senior day special recognition for “four year men” and plaque wall inside Lasch come to mind.
The old Seinfeld line of rooting for clothes is now, more than ever, true for me.
