Is there more talent in Illinois than there ever has been?

I have been tuned into high school football in Illinois for a long time and I have noticed that there are significantly more "big time" recruits than I have seen in the last two decades. Do ya'll think the talent has always been here but it has been overlooked or is this just a great run from Illinois?

There are about 10 players in the class of 2027 that are in the top 200 nationally and I can remember years where we only had 1 player in the top 200 if we even had one at all. My theory is that these 7 on 7 travel teams have helped create exposure and allowed our best athletes to compete year round, which helps close the gap with talented players in other states that can practice year round.

It just really stood out to me when going through the roster of some of these teams as I get ready to watch a few games tonight and I was wondering if ya'll had any thoughts? Or am I way off base here?

I think the talent has always been here. What’s changed is the microscope on high school sports and the amount of exposure these kids get today, with social media probably being the biggest driving force. Highlights, rankings, offers, camps, etc. are constantly in front of us now, so we know about these kids much earlier than we did 20–30 years ago.

Kids are also training more seriously and at younger ages. For better or worse (worse imo), a lot of them specialize in one sport, train year-round, work with private coaches and spend much more time developing.

So I don’t necessarily think Illinois suddenly started producing elite football talent. I think the talent was always here, but today’s environment develops it faster, exposes it nationally and pushes everyone else to keep up.

“A rising tide lifts all boats” is probably a good way to put it.

Definitely see far more “skill” position players in recent memory than the “old days”? I think Illinois and Chicago used to be looked at as a lineman and linebacker area? Is it me?

It also doesn't seem like IL has as much high level bball talent as 10-20 years ago. Totally off the top of my head but have some bball kids stuck with football over bball over the past decade? Yes, I know the high high level kids have left IL for prep schools recently.

Like most everything there are likely multiple factors that play into this.
