Tonight's refs made a big clock error that I noticed; failed to put time back on the clock

Remember late in the 3rd qtr, ISU pass on about 3rd and 19 was ruled a catch then replay stopped the action and you could see the ball bounce.

I told my wife that not only is it going to be 4 and very long but they will have to put time back on the clock.

The pass catch was overturned but the refs spaced out the used up time as did everyone else. I should get a prize, did any of you catch this at the time

On third-and-16, Jaylen Raynor took a snap with 1:04 to play in the third quarter and seemingly threw complete to Omari Hayes for 12 yards, so the clock kept running. Right before Iowa State was set to punt, with 19 seconds on the clock, officials were buzzed for a replay review.

The throw was ultimately ruled incomplete. The replay showed the ball touched the ground with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. But officials failed to reset the clock to that point, and Iowa State got to punt with :19 showing. After a punt and one play by Iowa, the third quarter ended.

I didn't. I thought it was ruled incomplete from the start because it was obviously, not a catch. This incompetent crew should never officiate anything higher than Pop effen Warner.

The refs made bad decisions all night. Spots, obvious penalties, clock issues. Just bad. Iowa St. got screwed on that.

The punt where our return guy got shoved into the ball, held and then, from my perspective, had an personal foul by ISU by hitting his head should have been called. Officials overlooked all of that. What was I not aware of?

Dont forget when the play clock ended 1 sec before the game clock at the end of the quarter, which should have been a delay of game for isu.

At the time, Ol' Doodle was yelling at the TV, "You gotta go back to when the ball hit the ground and reset the clock!"

In retrospect, it was better for us that they didn't.

The penalty is Illegal Forced Touching, and it doesn't even actually require the return man to touch the ball. Merely the attempt to shove him into the ball is a penalty and it should have been called. How you miss that as an officiating crew is utterly baffling.

During regular game play the process is the ref has to SEE the play clock hit 00, then look and see that the ball isn't snapped. So you usually get a half second or a second...

By the naked eye it seemed that the play clock was maybe .75 sec ahead of the game clock. So do they just use the same procedure of watching for the play clock to hit zero and then see they haven't snapped?

Seems like in that scenario, you can EASILY seen the play clock will expire before the game clock, so you should HAVE to run a play.

I won't comment on the missed calls as there seemed to be many. However, their mechanics on Iowa's punt was horrendous. Iowa was utilizing the option to switch jerseys to OL #s so they can utilize unbalanced formations. (An utterly moronic rule that zero coaches wanted by the way.) They were doing it every time, and I'm sure it was communicated to the officials pregame that it would happen. The white hat was making the announcement of the jersey # switches literally during the cadence of the punt each time. It interfered with communication and operation. The announcement has to be done by the time the players are set and ready for play. It was comically bad.

The end of quarter thing was BS. The play clock was a half a second at least ahead of game clock and Iowa state sat on it and time ran out. Kirk was livid. Not sure what explanation was but I stadium it should have been a delay of game.

I was told:

Inn 2021 they changed how time adjustments were made after replays. If there's not 2 minutes left in the 2nd or 5 minutes left in the 4th, they do not add time back on the clock. This was done to reduce replay time and increase the flow of the game.

This officiating crew was completely incompetent. They still weren’t close to being as bad as the officiating crew that did the Iowa/Florida bowl game 20 years ago.

I must have not finished my post. I was meaning screwed once on a punt they clearly dropped on the 3 or 4 they spotted at the 5.

We had HORRIBLE spots all night. The play on the punt was horrible. Clearly 2 personal fouls. The face mask on Brown was terrible.

there was no mistake by the crew on that incomplete isu pass in 3rd quarter. only in the last 2 minutes before half-time or before end of game time can be put back in that scenario per rules (at least as explained on youtube). so if those are the rules zero impact on game by that call. the delay of game miss though big impact...screwed iowa.

It makes me feel better that Iowa didn't benefit from an officiating blunder....but if that is truly a rule, it is a really, really dumb one. Officiating errors shouldn't affect time on the clock, whether it's the first quarter or last 2 min of the game.

Exactly. It's hilarious how the last minute of games the time keeping is examined with a damn microscope. But at any other point in the game it like we could give a flying F*ck about the clock.

You should ALWAYS correct the clock after an overturned review...It just makes sense.

At the end of the game situation there had to be at least 3 seconds on clock for ISU to run another play. Since there was only 1 the game was over
