This game is a great example of why Kirk Ferentz is not a HOF coach.

If you are actually HOF, you don’t look like an amateur at home in a rivalry game vs a first-year coach with all new players and mostly inferior talent.

I don’t know if Iowa wins this game or not. But I do know Iowa is not going to the CFP. You can’t win anything of consequence playing scared and playing not to lose.

Sigh.

A month ago I created a thread about how when Iowa wins big in this game they have very good teams most often. Even if we win this game by a point this team seems to be weak against big OLines and our OLine couldnt get much push and run game going. Those are two signs of a mediocre season because running is easier than passing, usually

Yeah, I agree.

From what I have seen, this is likely a 7-5 season.

Ball game is on the line and you run a quarterback draw for a quarterback who isn’t known as a runner and you throw to a receiver on 3rd and short who is running an out route short of the sticks..

I am just so bored with Ferentz football.
It could have been worse ... The WR we throw to short of the sticks could have stepped out of bounds ....when he has 10 yards of green in front of him

Really? Iowa won big in 2010 and 2016. How did those seasons turn out for Iowa? Don't overreact, it's just not worth it.

In an attempt to be as nice as possible, you really have an overreaction problem.

Perhaps you should consider a 24 hour rule

What am I overreacting about?

It was a very lackluster performance with uninspiring, unimaginative coaching. It is exactly the type of kryptonite that has held Kirk back from having a HOF coaching career. He will get that recognition because of his longevity but not because of any real accolades like winning an outright Big Ten title or Rose Bowl or making an appearance in the CFP.

Btw, when I compliment the team and coaches in games they have lost, am I under reacting? 🤔

Somehow I'm guessing guys that have stayed around long enough to reach the HOF are damned good coaches.

I'm sorry you aren’t inspired

You called an HOF coach an amateur. And claimed Iowa was playing scared and not to lose.

No, I said a first-year coach had him looking like an amateur. Big difference. And, IMO, yes, the Iowa State staff had their kids playing loose and ready to bring it. I did not see that from the Iowa side of things. It was a pretty lackluster performance IMO. In general, I was not impressed with the game plan or approach. Yes, it sure felt like Iowa was playing with the mindset of playing not to lose. If you disagree, you disagree.

Look, we go over this every season. I often defend individual players when fans attack them, or when criticism is ridiculous and over the top. I see plenty of gray and plenty of nuance. Rarely, if ever, is it either all bad or all good. Yesterday, that certainly held true. There were plenty of good things that happened in the game. I just did not like the body language I saw from the Iowa players. That does not mean I believe they were indifferent or scared of Iowa State. It does mean I didn’t like the body language and believe it is likely they were too tense and overthinking too much as not to make a critical mistake. Does that mean I am right? I have no idea. But that’s what I saw; people can have different views. None of it matters. It’s a message board for sh*ts and giggles (and at times group therapy 😂).

Also, check the game thread if you’re that interested. When Iowa got down 10-0, I responded to a few jumping off the ledge that I believed Iowa was still likely going to win the game. But then I did criticize Iowa’s approach coming out IMO flat and playing not to make mistakes. So, you can probably retire the “overreaction” charges you continue to level at me.

2-0.

"Playing scared" does not mean "scared". Gotcha.

Saying KF isn't a HOF coach? And accusing the team of playing scared?

For your sake, I would hope that was an overreaction

I do suspect some of this is Iowa keeping some stuff close to the vest considering we have that 3 game stretch looming. Vonnahme was not utilized much, and I think that may have been somewhat by design. They don't do this every year with Iowa State, but I suspect they did it this year becasue they thought they could still win, and it almost caught up to them.

Ferentz is a hall of fame coach because his teams have finished the season in the top 25 coach's poll more times than the amount of month's you'd probably last as a head coach at Iowa. His teams get better during the season, the culture improves and/or doesn't plummet (like many teams), and we usually play our best ball in November and bowl time and then ship a bunch of guys off to the NFL.

I can guarantee you, if Iowa plays Iowa State in late November this year, Iowa would win by 21 or more. We're much deeper and we’re developing a QB.

We got blown out in Ames in 2024 and then went on to share the B1G title and beat Nick Saban's LSU.

We almost lost to UNI and then won the Orange Bowl that year.

Another example. Six minutes in the 4th, it’s 3rd and short, and you run an out route short of the sticks.

It’s just hard to get excited with this same script played out over and over again.
Was it hard for you to get excited when we beat Vanderbilt last year? Is it hard for you to get excited owning Minnesota for basically the last 25 years and Nebraska/ Wisconsin for much of the last decade?

Yes, believe it or not, nuance does exist in meaning. I know that’s hard for someone like you to grasp, but I can promise you it does exist.

Playing scared, as in overthinking, not playing loose, preoccupied with not making a mistake, etc. This can most definitely be contrasted with the playing scared your brain is stuck on—intimidated, weak, full of trepidation of the opponent, etc.

How many times does this have to be explained to you?

Rag, don't know why you keep watching. Every year you say the same thing and every year Kirk keeps winning. What about going for it on 4th down near mid field? Never use to see that. Gave the clowns a short field and they got a field goal. Very unKirk like.

We'll get better, hope we can by the Michigan game. Playing on the road will be a real test for Brown and our offense.

This type of comment is so stupid. On so many levels.

Do you actually think coaches make the HOF for finishing in the Top 25 for x amount of seasons? Do you realize Kirk has finished in the Top 25 exactly 12 seasons? Do you realize this is his 28th season at Iowa? Your contention is that KF deserves the HOF because he’s finished in the Top 25 approximately 44% of the time? Seriously? Did you actually think that through?

Of all the arguments that could be made in favor of KF making the HOF, seasons finishing in the top 25 is about the dumbest possible case one could make. Throw in you thinking you would bolster your argument with the “let’s see you do better coaching” drivel, and you are about tit for tat with some of eyesofhawk’s dumbest posts.

He's been doing it for 27 years. We've seen that ISU game a million times. KF is conservative, stubborn, and knows nothing about QB play, and all those things have been etched in stone over that more than a quarter century running this program. The rumors of KF 2.0, 3.0, etc., are ridiculous. The guy who installed his own son as OC and QB coach will never change, and he may coach for another 10 years at least. OMG.

You were the one that used the word "scared".

If you wanted to convey "overthinking" (which I don't agree with any of that either), that's the word you would have used.

But you didn't. So now you intodroduce it as "nuance" to backtrack after being called out for saying something stupid

Finishing top 25 at Iowa is a little different than finishing top 25 at Ohio State or Georgia. given Iowas resources and population, he has Iowa punching well above their weight. Iowa could really easily slide down to a Minnesota or Nebraska in the years to come, which is where Iowa historically was before Hayden and KF.

I think Iowas tdam last year was particularly impressive and was one of the 12 best teams in the country, Cignetti was emphatic about how tough Iowas team was last year.

I used to never want the iowa vs iowa state game to be removed from the scheduled but my thoughts on that are changing. It’s a boring azz game most years and it doesn’t have the in-state rivalry and excitement it used to have.
I’d rather have a home and away series with a SEC team that changes every two years. I’m up for playing teams we don’t play often opposed to watching a snoozefest where Iowa underperforms most years. I think the players/staff feel the same way.
If we get blown out the first few years doing this, so be it. Maybe we won’t have to keep the same head coach/staff around doing the same things over and over and over again. I’d rather lose a game 35-27 against a LSU/Texas/Alabama than lose or sometimes even win a game 17-14 against Iowa State.
