OT: The old Wing T and Full House Backfield formations is alive and well with the KC Chiefs

Andy Reid and his coaches have dug into the old film room and resurrected Evy's wing T type formation. A beautifully designed run of 1st and goal had the broncos defenders heads and bodies spinning.

A tight formation with Mahomes in shotgun and two other running backs with him in a T formation and Kenneth Walker was to the left in a flanker position. At the snap Mahomes gathers in the ball and starts to the left with the one runner, while Walker goes to the right. Mahomes shovel passes the ball to Walker and other blockers make a clear hole to the endzone. This play was early in the fourth quarter.

And twice on 4th and 1 KC went total full house backfield with two runners and a huge linemen back with Mahomes who was in shotgun and they handed it off and went power.

Bob Commings, a 2-way starting lineman at 167 pounds for Evy's Rose Bowl teams, tried to run the Wing-T when he was head coach of the Hawkeyes in the 1970s. It didn't work, largely because he recruited the wrong kinds of skill position players. It was a round hole square peg deal. It's not the system. It's the person running it. And Reid has proven he's the anti-Ferentz of offensive football. Reid's football is winning football, but it's also creative and fun. Imagine that . . .

Good points. Commings did get his running game going after a few years. He had two very good OLine seasons with a couple of NFL players to run behind but once you miss recruiting those players year after year then his offenses fizzled. I would have to look it up but one of his teams went west to play USC and had about 400 yards of offense but lost big on mistakes.

That was not the Wing T. It was the ancestor of the Wing T, the unbalanced line Single Wing which was the dominant offense for at least 30 years from 1920 to 1950. The Chiefs have used it before.
