Because Peoples was RB3 at OSU and could meaningful snaps there. We really dont need OSU third teamers. I'd be happier if he got more snaps, but he's already shown he doesn't high upside.

Im only saying Martin might be, and he he aint going stay here if he doesnt play this year, because Hansen and Peoples are both coming back, because neither is NFL material.

and we both know that if Martin runs for 1000 yards at South Carolina or Missouri next year, youll be one the first saying Campbell and his staff screwed up. The discussion really aint worth having for a year, because Martin will be playing a lot somewhere next year. It might even be PSU.
Dude really said we don’t need the RB3 from Ohio state, what we need is the RB4 that we have now lol

You think a scrimmage against a second team Clemson team isnt about the equal of what Hansen ran against most of last year. The bowl game with those players in it is a lot more competitive than the Blue White game or a game against Marshall or Temple.

Let it play out and it may take two years. Hansen is a solid college running back. Martin might only be a solid one as well, or he might be an NFL talent. Like I already said, if he doesn't play some this year. He aint coming back here next year to stay behind the same guys. Then one of two things happen. He's average (like Hansen) at some other school, or people are saying hes an NFL talent at some other school.

All he did in a glorified scrimmage against a decent P4 team that was a year removed for the college playoff is play like a 4/5 star which is what he was out of HS. Its not like he lit up a MAC school. I know stars dont mean everything, but most will agree they can be a indicator.

Do you think Hansen has looked like a really strong college running back, not only at PSU but at ISU, or do think hes decent? You of all people know if PSU is going to compete at the highest level. Decent doesnt cut it. You say crap like that all the time.

Me I rather see PSU fail with Martin than the other guys. Really, Id rather see them fail with Cam Wallace. Hes got some explosion as well. They have 4 solid backs. They question is. Do they have one really good one? If they do. I can tell you who it isn't.
If the competition Hansen ran against last year was similar to the opt out laden sub par team when whole (Clemson) then this program is in big trouble. I mean, Campbell brought the whole damn team over here and all summer I read one post after another how ISU talent would be just fine in the Big Ten.

Hansen can’t win the argument this weekend. Buffalo is probably our weakest opponent of the season. If Hansen has a huge day, it’s because the defense is awful. If he struggles or even just has an average game, this topic becomes a 5 alarm blaze.
You are correct in the sense that anything achieved vs Buffalo is meaningless.....this would also include a Martin explosion. Wisconsin is obviously a lower tier Big 10 team as well, but will likely be the first real indicator of where the running game will stack up moving forward.

I understand this point , but Nate’s logic is very flawed. JF refused to emphasize his best back in Kaytron, played Liam Clifford over Koby Howard, and refused to play younger linebackers over Deluca, who was a situational player at best. JF was loyal to his seniors to an extreme fault. Martin could have looked like Saquon in practice and still would never see the field. TS made necessary changes over time to stabilize the team, such as giving Kaytron the carries he deserved. He wasn’t going to completely de-emphasize Singleton by giving Martin or Wallace carries. Campbell probably comfortable with Hansen’s high floor (doesn’t lose yards) lower ceiling profile for now. And like Joe or James, there may be a bit of favoritism and trust in his longterm players. Overall most of the buttons Campbell is pushing are correct, but most of us probably disagree with this one. We were all right about Koby vs Liam last year!
I will never forget seeing DeLuca getting literally pancaked 3 plays in a row last year.... It was astounding to me yet gimmy jimmy loved his favorites...

I've asked you this before and I'll ask it again. What did you expect Campbell to do when he got here in mid December and basically lost a whole recruting class? He had to be successful in bringing a lot of his ISU players with him in order for this team to have any chance to be successful. This is the same thing that any coach whom PSU had hired would've done, only the players most likely would've come from a lesser program than ISU.

You also continue to denigrate players just because they played for ISU. While they may not be the caliber of OSU's or Oregon's players, they come from a program that has been at the caliber of at least half of the other Big 10 programs; these players were on ISU teams that beat Iowa in 2024 and 2025, which is a Big 10 team that always finishes in the upper half of the Big 10 and yearly has one of the best defenses in the country. Also, whether you believe it or not, ISU plays in a Power 12 Conference that has some pretty good teams. Just two seasons ago, ISU played in the Big 12 Championship game.

Finally, the last coach was 1-10 against OSU, 0-2 against Oregon, 0-1 against ND, and 3-7 against Michigan with the players whom he recruited. Maybe if his teams had some more blue collar players like a lot of the ISU players, the last coach's teams might have played with more grit, passion and poise in those games and not come up short almost every single time.

Running Back and Edge Rusher seem to be the two biggest deficiencies of this team. Regardless, they are fun to watch. Rocco is the real deal, Rojas is playing like an elite Linebacker and we have two shut down cornerbacks. I realize we haven’t played anyone, but this team is fun to watch so far.

I really believe this offense needs a back that can break the big play. Right now I don't see any
So Hansen can break off a 65 yard run vs BYU but can't do that here? Why is that?

We aren't seeing any from any of the backs because teams are committed to limiting our run game and to make Rocco beat us. I know Lengwall is apparently a legend around here but his analysis is subjective and flawed.

We all want to see big plays. We also need to ensure we're not sacrificing the other 95% of our run game for the couple big plays a game we want. The small things win games. The long runs will come. From Hansen Peoples and others if they earn playing time

I disagree with you about Lengwall, assuming you are talking about Tengwall. As a former player, he does a pretty good job of being able to layout the details of a scheme while also providing the job of a position. He also points out small details that most people do not see, especially the ones that have never played football in their life. He has been spot on about the RBs. He mentions that our RBs need to improve their vision. Which I agree with. He does say they need to win some of these 1 on 1 match ups. He points out where the O-Line or TE missed a block or simply got beat. Where is he being subjective and where is the flaw?

I've moved on from Franklin but apparently you haven't, because all that you've done is continue to make negative comments about Campbell and the ISU players who follwed him to PSU. All I did was set forth Franklin's record against Michigan, ND, Oregon and OSU at PSU, which was 4-20, and use that as Exhibit A about how the players he recruited as a whole just weren't good enough in several ways to win even a half of the so-called toss up games or even games in which PSU was an underdog. Maybe Campbell won't be able to recruit well enough either to win those games, but I know damn well that the last coach never was going to be able to do it, because 11 plus seasons showed me that. And I was a Franklin supporter until October 2025.

Not a comparison at all. Hansen is 215lbs vs Zwinak at 235lbs. I am pretty confident that he will break loose sooner rather than later, so yes, be patient.

There are a few people that are so emotionally damaged from Franklin getting fired that it's like they're trying to punish everyone else so we're as miserable as they are. It’s amusing as long as you keep it to short doses. They are still going pretty strong so I'm guessing their revenge tour will last at least into next season.

Why does everything have to be so black and white?

Hansen may or may not be a great back for us ... to date, I haven't seen it, and I said that in the first game, and haven't changed that assessment yet, but I'm open to it. In game 2, he did show the ability to go north/south very well when given a lane, at least ... but didn't see any semblance of breakaway speed or elusiveness. But we don't know, at this point, if this will continue. Maybe he's being told to be more definitive and more of a north/south physical back than years prior? Maybe he's a little dinged and can't cut as well as normal. Who knows? I'm open to the possibility, but I'd also like to see more of the other options in the interim. Peoples seems a bit more athletic, but not sure he was any better of an RB. I liked what I saw from Martin, last year and so far this year, but maybe he just looks worse in practice, or maybe the guy can't pass block or remember plays, or ... who knows?

Why not just discuss what we see, and what might be, without making it into some polarizing nonsense ... yet again? And why are we so limited that everything has to go back to a Franklin v. Campbell fight? Grow up.

Sorry for thr typo. You're 100% entitled to disagree. Why does you agreeing with him make him spot on? The backs, particularly Hansen, don't lack vision. You're both entitled to that opinion but there's a large sample size that suggests otherwise. For example, his vision is why better than Singleton.
The entire assessment is subjective. Why do you disagree with that. He's providing an opinion based on what he believes. He's not stating facts.
Lots of former players are awful at analysis. He's not awful. Just not nearly as good as some believe.

Because the thread is about Tengwall and his observations. When there's a reason for things that's important to add to a discussion IMO...if teams continue to stack the box it's going to be tough for any back to be what most here want.

I like Hansen. The yards and bigger plays will come. I like that he rarely loses yards knows how to get upfield.
For right now Hansen is the most consistent. I would like to see PSU make an effort to run outside.
Regarding Martin & Wallace, I think it might be they are lacking in pass protection. Savon Huggins (RB coach) has stated on several occasions that if you aren't a solid pass blocker, you aren't going to receive much PT. Right now the strength of this offense is the passing, so protecting Becht is high priority.

Check out how easy Virginia Tech schedule is this year. He walked into a cupcake fest, even worse than Penn State‘s schedule. If he doesn’t win nine games this year, he should be fired from that place too.

Are you sure you don't want to include height, reach and 40 time? Geesh
Height and reach are irrelevant when the a weight difference is apparent. Zwinak ran a 4.55 vs Hansen 4.8. They are not comparable backs. Hansen's style is similar but I do not think it suits him very well. Zwinak routinely ran people over and dragged people. Hansen does not do that enough to compare. Carson is who he is and I am ok with it. End of story.

He is spot on because he played football as did I. So, him drawing up the plays and going into detail on how the scheme of that play is supposed to look is not stating facts? I have yet to see anything that screams subjective. He points out details whether it being good or bad that people that have never played football before do not see. I agree that singletons vision was not up to par last year to say the least, however, He points out, correctly mind you, on certain plays that could have been a larger gain than what it was. He doesn't do as good of a job in YOUR eyes. The trained eye and experienced eyes, what's he is talking about makes sense. Period.

He needs to review more film if he doesn't believe Hansen has good vision. That's the reality.
Every single back that has ever lived missed lanes...and a lot of them. It's about consistency. Hansen has shown this over the past 2 years...everyone is overevaluating 30 carries...and honestly not even accurately evaluating it IMO

“I think Carson’s a great football player, and I don’t think I’ve done a good enough job as the offensive coordinator showcasing him, getting our offense in a rhythm on the ground to where we can showcase what that guy is,” Mouser said. “He was an all-conference running back for us last year. Does that mean he’s an All-Big Ten running back? No, it doesn’t. But I just know the level of work that that guy brings and the physicality and how important it is to him.”

He also pointed out that Hansen hasn’t been stopped for a loss on any touches so far, which gives a sense of comfort even if the explosives haven’t been there.

Mouser has stated all four running backs will contribute this season, but Martin was the only one who didn’t see the field last Saturday. Fans have clamored for an increase in usage, which may be coming.

“Everything is being evaluated to help our pass game better and run game better,” Mouser said. “And Quinton is earning the right to get touches in the offense.”

This again goes to Q isn't trusted in pass protection and they're happy with Hansen

I liked Franklin and thought his achievements were often unfairly downplayed. His record against top tier was what it was, and I think there came a point where it was in his head and the players' heads. It happens. Bear was in Joe's head, and I watched PSU find ways to lose to 'Bama in the late 70's and early 80s as a result. It changed only when Bear passed; unfortunately, James' problem was broader than that.

An old friend taught me a saying several years ago: "It's good to look back, just don't stare." Franklin is gone, and he isn't coming back. There are posters, some who used to be good, who love/hate the guy so some much that they just can't let go and have made themselves ignore-worthy as a result. Some will never get over it, but one can hope that others might.
