We are a B+ program.

And in actuality - that is what Penn State has always been.
Yes we are currently. But no, you can’t be a b + program if you are 7th all time wins and 3rd all time bowl wins. If Franklin got to cfp more than just once perhaps we would be number 2 in bowl wins.

Campbell going to pull us up.

But we will have suites in The New Beaver. A scaled back renovation might have seen some funds supplementing the roster.
I thought that from day one. $400 million instead of $700 for the renovation would theoretically leave $300 million for NIL. Investing that at 5% would provide $15 million per year for NIL without ever touching the principal.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Schools are only allowed to pay $21 million and the rest has to come from donors. And PSU doesn't have $700 million anyway. I think they're borrowing most of that.

Univ. are getting creative in ways to make more money. Greystar would be happy to build one to go with the new dorm complex. Much more appealing that the endzone suites, :ROFLMAO: .

HAHAhaha...you are what your record says you are. Check the last 30 years. How long can entitled and delusional fans take credit for what was built prior to 1995? It's pretty pathetic that many fans still try to puff out their chests over what occurred before they were born. If NIL stays outside the top 10-15 PSU will continue to struggle to finish in that area. Princeton was once a great power. They claim 28 national championships.
Matt Campbell is a quality HFC. Given the financial resources, I think he can build a consistent playoff worthy team (12-16-24). Let's stop the fanboy fantasy coach em up pie in the sky.

I don't have any source, but I thought that Kraft's pitch was about 20% donations. It would take some skill, but if some of that percentage went to roster, it could easily acquire 3 or 4 difference makers. Kraft fought intense opposition to the timing and scope of this project from many different fronts (it is widely known that this was the genesis of the rift with Franklin). I think that's why he has perpetrated the myth that Franklin and now Campbell have more resources than they actually have. Now that a reliable source has confirmed that PSU is behind the chains, things could get interesting. Add this to his magical mystery tour coaching search and I'm at a loss as to what he's good at.

I thought Kraft's rift with Franklin was because Franklin hit him up for a raise after the 2024 season. Also that Franklin didn't want to spend enough money on new portal transfers because it would be out of balance with what existing players were getting.

I don't understand you comment about taking some of Kraft's 20% donations for the stadium and using that to pay players. I read that PSU now has $534 billion in athletics related debt which is the highest in the nation. PSU needs that 20% and more.

PSU is in the midst of the stadium renovation. Meanwhile, the ARMS. RACE. o_O presses on with other schools teams (😞) announcing major projects (e.g., tennessee). How does PSU stay #1?

But $$$$ doesn’t guarantee success.
e.g. Okie State loses to Tulsa in week one; comes back a week later and beats Oregon Quacks.
Gotta love it.

The rift originated over the stadium project. It's true Franklin's agent asked for an extension (Franklin was #16 on the list of highest paid coaches going into 2025 after a semi final appearance). It's his agent's job to ask and Kraft's option to say no. That's pretty standard. But the stadium issue was the first strike. Kraft assured Franklin that NIL would not be impacted and when Franklin tried to sign some blue chips ahead of the pending 2025 NCAA clearinghouse for NIL deals, the promised funds were no where to be found. Among those who really leaned PSU was Luke Wafle. That's when the myth was created that not signing high priced 5 stars was a Franklin decision....so as not to upset the locker room.
So in a nutshell, money (or lack there of) is consistent. At issue is how much can Campbell accomplish if he is stuck at 6th or 7th in the conference in roster money?
In terms of "donations" what I'm saying is that if a scaled back version of the stadium project had been entertained, perhaps some of the 20% anticipated donations could have been redirected to NIL funds?
Admittedly that's speculation. What isn't speculation is that PSU is not among those who are financially prepared to allow Coach Campbell to swim in the deep water of talent acquisition.

Total speculation here, but I think that after running his mouth "excellence at the highest level" and the NC our fans deserve (putting the next coach behind the eight ball) his profane leaked audio (not how I would want anyone in a responsible position who worked for me to speak....on or off the record) and his utter disaster of a coaching search......I think had he not been in the middle of this stadium renovation, he'd have been shown the door.

Here's a question, without the Sandusky scandal, would NIL giving be higher now? Would that have changed anything if Joe went out in a better way? Would the old guard donors embrace PSU football differently now and open up their wallets?

We always hear that they disliked Franklin and therefore NIL was down, but if that's true we should expect some dollars to roll in now or when we go 10-2 with this new coach this year so we can nail it in the portal. If we don't nail it in the portal we will be closer to being Iowa the next 2-3 years than USC or Oregon based on roster quality and youth.

I think not, I think the non-giving football donor culture would persist and will continue. Do the corporate folks after spending big bucks on new stadium suites, open their wallets again to give to NIL?

I'd be curious to find out with the highest spending schools, how many total donors are part of getting them to the highest echelons of NIL funding. I suspect it's more typical that a small number of highly committed megadonors are very involved than it is to get there by combing through the fanbase at large to fundraise. We may be lagging behind in that aspect.

  • I guess we'll never know the whole story about the rift between Kraft & Franklin.
  • My impression was that Kraft was willing to spend whatever was necessary to deliver a championship but Franklin was reluctant to pay portal players more than existing players. Hypothetically he didn't want to pay $800k for a top DT when Durant was "only" getting paid $600k. Players talk and Franklin didn't want to anger existing players. I think that's a balancing act that all coaches have to deal with.
  • I think Campbell is dealing with the same thing. I don't think he was willing to pay a guy like Luke Rreynolds more than he had already agreed to pay Brahmer. Or pay Amare Campbell more than Ebel, Brezina, or Bacon. It doesn't mean PSU didn't have the money. It means that he wasn't willing to risk turmoil amongst the players.
Wrt 20% of the stadium money... The university can spend as much or as little as they want on the stadium. They can't use stadium money to pay players ($21.5 million cap directly from the university which I'm sure we're doing). Where we might agree is that a lot of the big money people who are willing to contribute to the stadium are the same people we could hit up to contribute to the Happy Valley United NIL collective. So a donor who was willing to give $10 million to the stadium might be convinced to only give $7 million to the stadium + $3 million to the collective. But they're only willing to give $10 million total.

The rift is pretty well known and Franklin was assured that NIL would not suffer from the stadium fund donation (fundraising). When support for the project was tepid in some areas, Kraft even asked Franklin to speak in support (which he did) Until June of 2025 as the new NIL rules approached (7/1) and there was no cash to sign the likes of Luke Wafle.
Your next to last sentence reflects my point. You may not get a 10 million donor to give an additional 3 million to the collective, but would PSU be in a better spot if that 10 million had been shared between a stadium project and the roster?
I've been ostracized for consistently insisting that if recruiting doesn't improve, I don't care who the coach is, PSU will continue to place 3rd (at best) or (5th) at worst I hope....in the conference.
The loyal experts have insisted that Campbell makes wine from water and that money is being horded for a lavish dive into the portal. This survey is evidence that PSU doesn't have funds to acquire premier talent in the portal.
I don't think it's coincidence or a change of heart that is behind the recent willingness to acknowledge Joe. I think it's a desperate attempt to bring back potential donors that were lost because of the way Joe was treated.

I agree with your first sentence, and perhaps might even agree to a mere solid B.

However, I do not agree that Penn State has "always been" a B+ program.

For 20 years, from 1967 to 1996, Penn State (in my opinion, at least) was definitely a Top Tier A to A+ level program.

Until 1974 or so, Penn State by agreement with other Eastern schools played under the constraints of signing only 25 scholarships per year. Meanwhile the SEC, Big 8, and SWC routinely signed classes of 50. Dave Campbell's Texs Football magazine used to list all the recruits by the Texas schools, and he mentioned more than once that the SEC and Big 8 had similar numbers.

Yet there was Penn State defeating the Big 8 champs twice in the Orange Bowl and the SWC champs twice in the Cotton Bowl. With only 1/2 of the annual recruits of those programs. Yes, Bear Bryant had Joe figured out, but few other coaches in that 20-year span did.

Some people, including oddly enough some Penn State fans themselves, seem to base the Nittany Lion program on how a cluster of sportswriters from across the USA voted in polls. These same people overlook undefeated, untied seasons in 1968, 1969, 1973, and 1994. They seem to believe that teams like OSU ('68), UT ('69), or NU ('94) were better than the Nittany Lions. I don't share that belief and am willing to debate on the merits of those squads. I'm not quite so confident that the 1973 team was better than ND or Alabama; nevertheless, that '73 squad was the only one to go 12-0.

If one considers the outstanding teams of 1971, 72, 77, 78, 81, 85, 93, and 96 then it should be clear that Penn State was among the truly highest level of football porograms in America for 2 decades.

Notice I omitted the 1982 and 1986 squads which managed to get enough votes to claim a MNC. That's 14 of 20 seasons of NC-caliber production. How many other programs showed such consistency over that span?

And finally, Penn State accomplished all that success without a single NCAA violation, with only a few #1 rated recruiting classes, and for many years without non-medical redshirting. Sounds like better than a B+ program to me.
Overall I agree but there are some (very simple) maths issues in your text

Urban Meyer would have been the next PSU hc back then and we go a completely different trajectory.
