Name the other.

Butter beans are very underrated; one of my favorite meals in the world is the pork chop and butter beans at The Little Owl in Manhattan. I also love some southern green beans with bacon/onions and hot sauce (and their dorky French haricot verts cousins served with sea salt and butter).

Green beans can be alright. Lima beans are like little pillows of spoiled mashed potatoes covered in a layer of unflavorable skin.

Baked Beans gets a massive lift from molasses, brown sugar, pork, ketchup, mustard, etc. My aunt makes them with breakfast sausage and they're incredible. But beans, like Brussel sprouts, needs some help when it comes to the flavor department....

The whole "haricots verts" thing always makes me laugh. The literal translation from French is "green beans". I guess a bougie restaurant somewhere decided to make green beans sound like fancy s**t. But they're still just green beans. A side of purée de pommes de terre would sound great too. 🤷‍♂️

As far as beans go, I hate to make them unhealthy by adding a bunch of stuff. A side of straight black beans always tastes great. Another option is making harira with dark red kidney beans instead of the traditional chickpeas. To me, chickpeas belong on salads because their texture feels weird in soup. Also, dark red kidney beans give the harira more of a chili vibe.

I mean, they are technically different in size/texture from American green beans, but yeah, they are still green beans and that is the literal translation. I think the difference is pretty significant where texture and even taste are concerned though I love both varieties.

At Publix this morning, a sign on my shopping cart informed me that Bush's beans are the "official beans of the SEC." Buy Bush's beans and you can toot Dixie! And of course, it just means more.

There aren't many beans that I don't enjoy depending on the application. Pork 'n' beans, baked beans, lima beans, kidney beans, green beans, red beans, black beans -- I like them all, but they don't always like me and when they don't, neither does my wife. ;-)
