That team went on to win the FCS title, actually a lot of those players won multiple of them. We got Polasek out of that too so yeah they were a lot better than you give them credit.

They were good but that was the weakest ND St team in a five year stretch. ND St. Did not win a national title in 2016. Damn I hated walking out of stadium after that loss. Loss still pisses me off.

Ugh don't remind me, was there and made my young son cry...we looked absolutely listless out there, nobody seemed interested and several players were injured or not playing which didn't help.

And once again, did we really lose that game without the inclusion of idiot officials doing boneheaded things in the last minute or so. Do you remember the first onside kick? After NDST score to climb within 2 pts iirc they were in kickoff formation, everyone was ready, but the ref by the kicker wouldnt let him kick while the playclock was winding down. Totally stupid not to reset the playclock to 25 seconds.

The kick was finally made right as the playclock hit 0:00, the hawks recovered and game over, but wait, the idiot head ref back by the hawk kick returners throws a flag and said Delay of Game. Well how can it be a delay of game with a stopped game clock when the refs are holding up the kick with the play clock running.

Wow the hawk coaches, players and a lot of fans were livid. A lot of fans couldnt figure out what was happening. And of course, NDST recovers the do over onside kick. Just a shame

Why not kick me in the balls so I remember that even more lol? Seriously was the most doom and gloom game I have been to in a long time …. Even our family members (mom and dad and younger sis RIP) as we were at one another’s throats after that sheet show … was not a good day all around

Sounds familiar. I think I just saw something similar--not exactly the same mind you--but something similar just last week. In fact, I think I've seen games like that from the Hawkeyes quite a bit over the last quarter century.

OTOH, why shouldn't Iowa have had the game well in hand so that shenanigans like that would be moot? I mean, it was North Dakota State not Alabama or Notre Dame or Ohio State. Wow.

Beathard was hurt and Stanley came in for a series and looked good but then Beathard came back. I think this was the sports hernia year or whatever that was that one announcer who quit called out this example of players playing hurt.

That NDST team was very good. Remember, the hawks got off to a bad start in that game when they whiffed on a block, CJB got hit while passing, the ball popped up in the air and they got about a 30 yard INT TD. Seven zip NDST and Iowa came back to lead 14-7 at the half but NDST wasnt moving the ball in the first half much at all.

Crap happens in football games and yet later in the year this hawk team beat #3 undefeated Mich. I would agree that the hawks were not a well oiled machine that day maybe because they buried ISU the week before and were not focused enough.

That game was so frustrating to watch. They were inviting us to take free yardage in the flats and we only took them up on their offer like twice the whole game, opting instead to continue running right where they were hoping we would run. Kudos to them for being able to stop those runs and do some running themselves.

It should never have come down to blaming refs or whatever other excuses fans make, even if the TD run that was called back was a pretty iffy holding call.

I remember that start and first drive CJ missed kittle and had him for what would’ve been a 90+ yd td. Also 2nd half we had a long run inside the 10 called back for a hold that was really just a pancake block, think by kittle, which was BS call rewatching it. Shades of wegher td vs Nw in 09’ negated by a flat. Problem was we couldn’t run the ball that day and after we stuffed their 2 pt try went 3 and out instead of pick up 1-2 first downs to ice the game.

NDSU did not win the title that year, they lost in the semifinal game.
They were a good team but, regardless, Iowa should not ever be losing to an FCS team. Iowa was #11 at the time too
