Strange game. The red card got accepted by VAR, in that it did meet the wording of the law. But in the flow of the game, it was not a great call by the ref. In real time, my reaction to the sequence was it should be a yellow on both players. And you could make a case that you could have not booked either of them, and just gave them a strong warning. But I did disagree with issuing a red, as well as not issuing anything to the other player.

The goal was also a fun thing to evaluate. By the law, you can call offsides on a player in an offside position that plays the ball, or a player in an offside position that attempts to play the ball (and influences the defender or goalie by his actions. The Man U. player in an offside position did make every effort to play the ball, and the defender and GK were defending for that possibility. However, he missed the ball, and Haaland, who was barely onside, made a nice play to score the goal. The refs and VAR, IMHO, did get the call correct on the goal.

Either both get yellows or both get reds....poor officiating yet again. I think in a derby you give Bruno and Foden yellows and move on. Bruno for certain deserved a card as well there. Foden was dumb to retaliate and Bruno was dumb for the extra kick.

In terms of the offsides, it certainly wasn't the correct call. Hell the EPL knows they didn't make the correct call and already admitted it at 10pm on a Sunday night their time. It's not even up for debate, the defender Martinez had to choose who to defend because Enzo was offside and Haaland was behind him. There is no gray area and I'm not sure you really understand the sport or that rule if you think that was a good or correct call. To say Enzo didn't make an attempt on the ball when he tried to execute a diving header and missed by one to two inches means he made an attempt to play the ball. So he was offside and trying to impact the play and the defender had to run to him instead of Haaland. How do you try and say he wasn't in the play? That is not passive offsides if you know what the rules are. Had ENZO just stood there or walked back giving himself up like many do when they are offsides like he was I could see it....but he tried to score and occupied the defender and the keeper for that brief moment.

That being said as a United fan, they didn't deserve 3 points at all and didn't play for 3 points. Carrick waited until the 70th minute to bring on a proper striker....and I have no idea what Sesko has to do to start in the major matches. It's just absurd. You cannot keep marching out skillful smurfs and think they impact a modern CB. Bruno, Cunha, Mbuemo, and Rashford are not a threat at all in the box in the air. All are decent and very skillful, but not a single one is an aerial threat to any modern CB.

The league officially said today that the goal should have been sent back to the ref for further review. VAR’s ruling was that Haaland was onsides, nothing more.

That one wasn't a hard one for VAR to clear up honestly in 20 seconds. Enzo was clearly offsides on the initial ball and then made a play for the ball which made the defender choose him over Haaland.....passing the buck there is pretty weak. United should have done more in that match so they really only have themselves to blame......but that was pretty atrocious. If VAR cannot get the simple ones right what are we really doing?

For years I’ve always said that following European leagues was the best way to wake up early on a Saturday. A 7:30am kickoff for the Spur-Villa Dregs Derby is most definitely an exception to that rule.

lol, it’s not starting off well, no.

14’ now. Three times the Villa keeper Suzuki has gotten the ball in play and either kicked it out of bounds or just kicked it deep downfield for the Spurs to take possession. He did have two good saves in a sequence, though.

I got back to the match at 0-2 and caught the 3rd goal. Not a good showing, poor effort from the Spurs, I thought. Nothing sadder than seeing the stadium emptying out.
