Gotta let this season play out

Based on the first three weeks, the prudent course is to let this season play out with the current staff and evaluate as it goes. Multiple reasons for this:

  1. The team has improved in each game so far. Not been enough, but obvious tangible improvment has occurred.
  2. Losses have been driven by historical levels of interceptions. The staff is not responsible for this, nor are they calling plays that are particularly high risk or INT prone.
  3. 2 qbs with limited experience have driven the INT issues, which should likley improve with more experience. Both have shown some upside to build on. The locking on receivers needs to be improved and with game play should.
  4. The D has used very very questionable player patterns that has caused much os the scores in week one and two. From the second half of BC and yesterday there was some improvement in personnel usage which should bode well going forward. While many teams have new players, you can not overlook the factor of seeing what you have under the lights and that is developing and showing improvement and not getting worse.
  5. The D (and INTs) are the main problems. We have a defnsive minded head coach. We have seen tangible results from his past involvment. For all the micromanging hand wringers I assert you have it exactly baclwards. I want GS to be all over the D and micromanage the hell out of the D. The guys has not forgotten how to coach dbs and the D as a whole. IN particular we heard him say he let things go on he shouldnt have and became involved. I dont think that's with KC. My estimation is it is with the D and from the second hald of BC on when player usage and some scheme changed, things improved. GS needs to double down on D imvolvement.
  6. Having an interim hc solves nothing. A temproary statement and salve for the complainers. Yes if things fall off a cliff it should be considered to make a statement. To do so BEFOR#E we play the post Indiana portion of the schedule would show a lack of prudent judgment feom Zinn. Further, who would it even be--please don't say Johansen. From what we have seen in his performance to date, there is a real concern he is way in over his head. Hoping the last two weeks have been growth but HIS D doesnt set edges, jumps offsides, gives cushion and plays 41 and 4 as if he is being bribed. His background shows success at lower levels and it's not unreasonbale for it to take a few weeks and we see growth. The idea that GS should leave him alone with the D is foolish. It should be an all hands on effort and much can be learned, and collaborative work may yield some D gains.
  7. The post Indiana schedule below. A few very tough games but no guaranteed losses like p;ast years. A prudent AD lets this play out to an imroving or falling by the wayside program. There is no reason behind the scenes prep cant occur. Blowout losses to Maryland and NW would give the impetus needed. W's over those give the trend a different look. PLAN yes but premature for any decisions till post Indiana plays out.

Yes true but one game for one and 2 for the other-and both showed some upside. Would think the INT issue has to get better --it has to---and perhaps we catch an INT the other way.

Anyway-after Maryland and NW we should have more information about the trajectory.

Let’s forget about the absolute unacceptable, inexcusable loss to UMass for a minute:

1) our D STINKS
2) BC STINKS
2) SC was without their stud future first round draft pick wide receiver
3) SC’a D isn’t too good
4) we are gonna get beyond embarrassed at home in two weeks by Indiana. Not just on the field, but in the stands.
5) we’re not beating Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State, or Northwestern. Maryland and Michigan State are tossups at the very best right now.

…. Waiting until the end of this season would be a major, major mistake. We need to get off our asses, fire Gregg and make a higher as soon as possible so that recruiting can begin as soon as possible. How anyone who is a Rutgers Football fan doesn’t understand this is beyond me.

Of course Shelby thinks Schiano is a proven failure, but it’s not cut and dried that now’s the time to fire him. Even if assuming another losing season and more likely just 2-3 wins, no one’s coming now so you’ll have an internal promotion to interim which accomplishes nothing since if they are planning to fire him they will be making prelim confidential inquires anyway.

The only positive in your list of 5 is your first sentence in #1. Yes, the team is improving with each game, but that's what happens with most college football teams. It's been said multiple times by many coaches and commentators that the greatest improvement occurs after the first game of the season. But ever other item in your list is squarely the responsibility of the head coach and the coaching staff, indicating failures of: (1) talent evaluation; (2) development; (3) in-game coaching; (4) scheme; (5) preparation for each opponent. As for #6, it does solve something-it shows potential HCs that Rutgers is serious about turning the program around and Rutgers will no longer tolerate mediocrity or worse.

wow

and so the Greg just needs a chance narrative begins

"Those the gods would destroy are first lifted-up."

A few years ago (23) I saw a 4 win Colorado team play Caleb's USC 48-41. I saw then that USC doesn't travel well. There are dozens of articles about that pattern online. I wouldn't take the tight USC game as indicative of anything big but that's what the inclination will be. GS is a really smart coach who holds on to really dumb ideas on offense like a terrier with a bone. It wont change now.

There really is nothing to play out. Yes, the team played better in the last 2 games. They lost both games by 7 pts. Losing by 7 pts is not good. The coaching staff is getting paid huge $$$ to win games which they are not doing. . The team is 0-3 and that is who they are. They will win next Friday and then get handled by Indiana who is more talented and much better coached. So 1-4 is a bad team, no matter how the talking heads want to frame it.

We are in year 18 of Greg Schiano. I don't know how much more information you could possibly need to evaluate and understand what you are getting with him. You are posting about the man as if its year 3 of a first time HC. You either accept the mediocrity he provides or you don't

Schiano is done. Not just at Rutgers, but generally.

25 years ago he was able to sell people on his vision of "doing it the right way", building a program From the Ground Up, "Rutgers Men", etc.

Except that game is gone. It's left Greg Schiano standing alone, holding God knows how many millions of dollars worth of our money.

There is no program building. In the age of pure pay to play the only Rutgers Men are the ones on the roster this year.

The only tool in Schiano's bag is a rusty measuring stick that's marked in cubits.

A winning program in the modern era is defined by two fundamental abilities: 1) raising shitloads of money and 2) Xs & Os coaching. Greg walks into his office everyday down 0-2 in the count.

You said that Travis Johansen seems in over his head, which I agree with. How is it possible that failing on your last two DC hires when you are supposed to be a defensive minded coach is not a fireable offense?

Tories etrc The pitchfork crowd is out. Agree much to be upset about.

BUT terminating now is imprudent and wouldnt expect Zinn to do that if she's as built for the job as said.

The pitchfork crowd misinterprets my indication of letting this season play out. It's the judicious move and doesn't presuppose a result. Further, and most frustrating, is the absolute inconsistencies spouted many times in one post here repatyedly. As an ex, GS doesnt allow his coordinators freedom. When he does allow them playcalling and personnel, he is blamed for their foibles. He hasnt by all media accounts had sufficient NIL until this year and he is blamed for not fielding top tier talent. Yes it's a message board and well thought out positions are not part and parcel, but thrown out the bums isnt the only mantra if you have some perspective. Some have lived through 6 or more coaches and understand the inherent RU problems and see where the errors have been and are thry fixable. And could they get worse. Having an interim before Maryland and NW only soothes the keyboard can him clsss (and lets not foget all the threads pre season about records, prior issues and just plain setting up the argument for termination even before the seaosn has begun.)

Are the INT's fixable--we'll see.

WIth GS focusing on the D and personnle packages will things improve--we will see

DId the young receivers and rbs look good--yes yesterday.

Did the OL show improvement yes--

Was Umass a bad loss -yes but as it turns out it may just be a bad MAC loss and not a historic loss to an 0-16 team as this Umass is not that team.

Can the team beat a selection of Mary NW Neb MSU --we will see but thats the point we should see. To expect wins against SC and Indian a re foolish. Umass and BC were bad losses but there was a lot of newness and historically bad INT play. Again lets see where this goes. Everyone wants to win but some perspective is needed of what we have, how much opportunity we have had over the last few years etc. Letting it play out will make the choice onvious and all the planning needed can be occuring

The “we don’t have the money” narrative is ******** and has been put to rest by many.
Fair to guess none of these enlightened opinions come with an 18M+ donation to cover a worse case scenario. New coach is going to want his own staff also.

I would agree that firing him before the end of this season and being on the hook for $18.5M would be imprudent, as RU doesn't have the coin. If we did, we'd have better players.

But I strongly disavow any association between that and thinking his staying adds any value. It does not. Greg Schiano is a dead man walking - and there will be Dark Times before he is gone.

I recommend bourbon. Or drugs. Maybe a nap. Naps are good, though I never really could nap properly, myself. I can nap on the boat, I guess. But that just kinda circles back to the bourbon and drugs.

Shea was actually a pretty good x and o guy, just an awful hc who had zero support and was truly a fish out of water. Ash sucked but Greg is no better.

I don't agree- Keli and Tate know that a winning team will bring in so much more money to the team so replacing Greg has a very high ceiling. I also think we get the money if we need it.

As for money needed to buy better players- we spent around $20 mil on players this year. UMass may have spent $2-3 mil and BC closer to 10-12...And they played us like they had the better players.

OP - the season has already played out !

It’s mercifully over for Schiano !

He should have been fired last year not even being able to make a bowl game with a nfl qb / stud Wrs and stud rb.

Defense - his forte - was an atrocity last year and it may be worse this year !

End the bleeding 🩸 already !

The one and only reason not to fire Greg is if we are making an admission that we’re not cut out for the big ten and no longer want to compete. Full stop. Everything else is a beaten down fanbase that has grown so accustomed to horrible football

Another reason is that GS is somewhat of an iconic figure who will have Rutgers things named after him some day. He did raise season tickets by 20% a year for awhile once he got rolling in the aughts. He did get stadium expanded, improved academics and had limited scandals - that all helped RU get into B1G. Newish AD/Prez just booting him abruptly might leave some bad karma. Its not like a quick fire will make current season a lot better. Three months of "Rutgers adrift" drama wont help anyone.

I often say I see GS as a Moses type figure. Moses got the slaves freed and laid down a new culture but Moses pissed God off and was denied entry to the Promised Land (he went right to heaven after death though). Greg was an authoritarian figure (would make a good state trooper) and culture maker but he cant get to the promised land - but he was still Moses. I expect GS will be gone but with lower drama. I don't see GS going mafia either. Kelly and LSU admins were battling in court for awhile and it was toxic

Coach 18 football teams over 3 decades (4 including the GA job in 89) and they have to name something after him (even if its not the field house lol). He was defo a key to getting stadium built and B1G membership. Longest employed coach in the oldest program . I read GS began the Scarlet Walk so I could see the Gregory Edward Schiano Scarlet Walk with a bronze axe. Chop like you mean it (except in the red zone)

Point #3 is a big reason some folks are hopeful about this team. USC fans are PISSED at the defense and complaining they are still soft. Gary Patterson was hired to fix that defense and the natives are restless. Keep in mind that USC's rush defense ranked #80 last year in yards per attempt. USC finished last season ranked #20 with a defense that couldn't stop the run and they know they will not be competing for a championship until that is fixed.

I agree with the sentiment you have to let the season play out. But I don't see many opportunities for wins. I posted last week the schedule was manageable enough for a 7-5 season, but that was starting the season with a 3-1 record instead of 1-3.

Howard W
Indiana L
at Maryland 60% L 40% W
at Northwestern 70% L 30% W
Michigan L
at Wisconsin 65% L 35% W
Nebraska 60% L 40% W
at Penn State L
Michigan State 60% L 40% W

I would increase the W%'s by 20 -- 25 if RU started the season 3-1. Rutgers has the #118 Rushing Offense at 116.3 yards per game as well as #118 in Rushing Yards Per Carry at 3.56 YPA against teams who finished in the bottom 3rd in run defense last year in FBS. It isn't getting any easier folks. It appears to me that 3-9 is going to be the ceiling.

This is BIG TEN football ! Greggy is in year 7! This is not pop warner and no not everyone is getting a ribbon at the end of the season.

UMass and BC are historic losses. Greg’s decisions in USC game cost us a chance. Allowing him to stay sends the wrong message.

Indiana proved it’s possible. I don’t want to hear about this is Rutgers and things can not happen here blah blah blah.

NO he does not deserve to play the weak Big Ten schedules the second half of the year . He does not get to say we improved all year with a young team and win a few games.

Hes awful always has and always will. FIRE him!
