This Just In: Scoring Points Leads to Winning Titles

Inspired by Casey Cunningham's email.

Based on a minimum of 10 matches that did not end with a pin at the 2026 NCAA tournament:

  • PSU outscored the next closest team by 33% per non-pin match.
  • PSU outscored the next closest podium team, Nebraska, by 54% per non-pin match.
  • PSU outscored Iowa by 64% per non-pin match.
  • PSU outscored Oklahoma State by 83% per non-pin match.
  • Oklahoma State is not in the graphic because they finished 20th with 5.9 points per non-pin match.
  • How about those Dragons? Going out with their pistols empty and barrels smoking. No one scored more points per match in their loses than Drexel's 5.7. Maybe work on some defense though?

In the tech fall era (1985 - present) PSU's 10.8 points scored per non-pin match is the highest ever.

The only other team to hit double digits was 1992 Iowa with 10.4.

Last year's team obviously benefited from the 3 point TD, but last year's team also had the largest gap between themselves and the next closest team (minimum 20 matches) by a wide margin.

Interesting stats! Now, how about a follow on analysis that shows how many PSU matches were won where the PSU wrestler outscored his opponent? :LOL:

I think there should be a study done to show that Penn State wins 83% of their matches by scoring more offensive points than their opponents by stalling. I mean, holy cow while Penn State wrestlers arecscoring all of the offensive points they hardly ever let the other guy score. It's stalling. Just ask any HR fan or even that really smart Cornell guy, Dylan Palacio.
