Is Surace the future? If so, let him play.

I would expect a new coach to bring in his own QB and both of this guys will be gone so it really doesn’t matter.

Correct. And regardless of all else, in the NIL era you always play who gives you the best chance to win. We rolled with a QB who couldn’t consistently grip the football over Surace. What does that tell you about what AJ must be showing in practice? That sounds harsh but it’s the truth.

The QB if the future will be who the next HC recruits,
This year it doesn't really matter if it's Dylan or AJ, both (so far) leave a lot to be desired and so far in his 3rd year Surace hasn't shown he has what it takes to be looked on as a QB with a good future ..
At best AJ is a placeholder if he starts next year , because Greg is back , while Lonergan is a rent a wreck that will be gone after this season mercifully ends.

Not so sure. Raymond's lack of breakaway speed isn't ideal so might be a money and system choice. Id rather a top shelf qb and recievers vs rb. Rb is easier to fill imho
Raymond is spectacular and unstoppable on 4th and 1 direct snaps.

Irreplaceable via the portal.

In the pre Wild West era I would agree with you but each year you have a different roster now so you have to play the guy you think will help you win more games

Coaches think it is.

I just think the old story is just true - when you have a QB battle it’s Becasue you don’t have one that stands out and that has always been the case under GS and here we go again. Both QBs are likely not good enough
It is so unfortunate. Once again failed to address a key issue that would be the difference in potential 500 season and a bowl game. Even with this D .. all it appears we needed was a quality QB..not even a stud.

Last year it was a quality DC, not two pieces of nadda.

Dylan is the guy because GS is on life support and he has to go with who might get us the win. Somehow they have got to fix these "passes to the other guys" to quote B1G Live team. Take that away and even with his terrible accuracy he can win games.

Yup - this. Greg knows he has no prayer of returning if he doesn’t get at least 5 wins and he might need 6. That’s why it’s telling that Lonergan played vs USC despite clearly not being close to 100% (if you can’t consistently grip the football that’s obviously an issue). At this point, it’s hard to imagine AJ was ever really close in the QB race because if that was true, AJ would clearly be the choice with Dylan not at full strength.

I don’t think either of them, or Greg, will be back. But in the unlikely event that Greg gets the 5-6 wins he’d need to have even a prayer of returning, the case for Lonergan returning (he’ll have one more year now) would be better since he’d probably be the guy to lead the flux of late wins (which as I said is unlikely in the first place).

It didn’t seem like the coaching staff had any confidence in AJ whatsoever from the play calling in the BC game. Unless Lonergan gets hurt again, he’s unlikely to get much run the rest of the way IMO.

Why switch to a worse quarterback?

Didnt Surace throw 4 INT v BC? Do you really think he is better?

There is no chance he’s better. You’d have to be blind to conclude that. And again, Lonergan played the last game hurt.

UMass might suck but the reason Lonergan was so bad in that game is we averaged like 1 YPC on the ground. No QB is going to look good in that situation. Netting 30 rush yards total against UMass was a fire worthy event in its own right no doubt. But Lonergan didn’t look terrible until it was clear we couldn’t run the ball. I’m not saying he’s great - but he’s likely not as bad as some are making him out to be.

No chance he’s retained with 5/6 wins with the stench of UMass still there & losing to BC.

I legitimately think he would need to win 7/8 games at this point to stay on and that’s not really looking possible without some miracles.

And with Needham getting destroyed as LT. Also the Umass game may look different in a few weeks time -remains to be seen. The talking head Portnoy types aside but no serious people give him any mind.

Not true. If he somehow goes 5-4 the rest of the way every other word out of his mouth will be ‘improvement’ and he will hang on for another year. Then in 2027 The Grifter will recycle prior excuses, and so on.

He's not,

told you all 2yrs ago, to a litany of ridicule, he'd never start here

People love him due to mods, being nj bred, and the other guy but you can't watch him in the closed practices and think he's anything special. My takeaway was that he'd be a career back up at this level

With wholesale roster changes on every team in every season, I think "he is the future" is too anachronistic to consider anymore. I wish it weren't that way...

Rumor is Schiano loved him also, which shows how the game has passed him by.

Surace makes the mistakes that first year starter makes. Longeran makes mistakes that an experienced QB shouldn't make.

Come on. Stop. Surace looked basically unplayable. It had nothing to do with experience. His footwork is not good at all and he routinely throws off his back foot. That has nothing to with experience.

This is not to remotely suggest that Lonergan is “good” but he is miles and miles better than AJ right now. Enough so to get the nod despite significant limitations due to injury.
