OT: Stanley Kubrick Tripleheader on TCM tonight, Thursday 24th

I suppose I should put up a permanent TCM thread, not today.

TCM has been highlighting Kubrick’s films on Thursdays this month, the last three to be shown are The Shining at 8pm Eastern, Full Metal Jacket at 10:45, Eyes Wide Shut at 1 am. Each of these three are great films, imo, and I think Eyes Wide Shut is particularly special. YMMV of course, I think Barry Lyndon (shown last week) is way up there with his very best, this would be a minority opinion, I’m sure.

The boot camp scenes of Full Metal Jacket are some of the best film I’ve ever seen, spectacularly good.

Every Kubrick film is in the “You gotta see this at least once” category. Sorry I didn’t bring this up earlier this month, but A Clockwork Orange is also at the top of my “Seeing this once and never again” list, along with Requiem for a Dream.

Hard agree. ACO creeped me out to my very core. I saw it at the Forum back in the day and it was bad enough but later I forced myself to sit through it with closed captioning, never again.

I believe it was one of the films featured in the Eisenhower Auditorium when I took Intro to Cinema as an elective. I'm thinking my Jr year 77-78. Another similar one that we saw was The Day of the Locust. I can't remember the Prof from that class but he was able to get Conrad Hall to attend that day during the screening and speak on it. I think he knew him.

My cinema class took place in Schwab Auditorium. I got a pretty decent dose of European and Japanese films, is my recollection.

Also, my first year, ‘74-‘75, there were two year-long film festivals, one for Ingmar Bergman, the Swede, and one for Charlie Chaplin. Back then you could go years before being able to catch a good movie, I’ll never forget watching Modern Times, for the first time, in the Eisenhower and the entire auditorium was roaring with laughter.

I was there for every Bergman and Chaplin film in those two series in '74 - '75. Great films, great times, LionJim.
